Job description

Job Summary

The Medical Assistant (MA) is a key member of the EVRR Cardiology patient-care team, providing clinical and administrative support in a fast-paced interventional cardiology practice. Reporting to the Practice Manager and working directly with physicians and the clinical team, the MA rooms and prepares patients, obtains vital signs and clinical histories, performs and documents EKGs, applies ambulatory cardiac monitors, and supports providers throughout each visit.

The role also includes chart preparation, care coordination, documentation, and follow-up communication under provider direction. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable with technology and electronic health records, with strong communication skills and an unwavering commitment to patient safety, infection control, and HIPAA compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

•    Room patients, verify identity, and obtain vital signs (including manual BP), height, weight, and clinical history.

•    Perform and document 12-lead EKGs; apply, set up, and remove Holter and other ambulatory cardiac monitors per protocol.

•    Reconcile medications, allergies, and history at each visit; reinforce provider-delivered patient education.

•    Assist providers with in-office procedures and stress test preparation, following sterile and safety protocols.

•    Maintain exam-room readiness and infection control; promptly notify providers of abnormal findings or patient concerns.

Care Coordination & Documentation

•    Complete pre-visit chart prep, ensuring relevant results, prior notes, and outside records are available.

•    Process prescription refills per provider standing orders for review; manage surgical and cardiac clearance documentation.

•    Review and upload incoming faxes, results, and referrals; assist with prior authorizations and result follow-up.

•    Communicate test results to patients per provider direction and document all communications in the EHR; coordinate diagnostic testing and follow-up scheduling.

Operational & Compliance Support

•    Maintain clinic flow; respond to phone calls, EHR portal messages, and Phreesia (patient intake) inquiries within established response-time standards.

•    Monitor and restock clinical supplies, medication samples, and PPE; ensure equipment is functional, calibrated, and ready for use.

•    Uphold HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, and Michigan scope-of-practice standards; operate strictly within MA scope and escalate clinical questions outside scope.

•    Complete required training (HIPAA, OSHA, infection control, BLS) on time and support practice improvement initiatives and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

•    Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program (CMA, RMA, or CCMA credential strongly preferred).

•    Current BLS / CPR certification (American Heart Association preferred).

•    Minimum 2 years of Medical Assistant experience in an outpatient clinic or hospital setting.

•    Proficiency performing EKGs and obtaining vital signs, including manual blood pressure measurements.

•    Demonstrated proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and basic Microsoft Office / Google Workspace tools.

•    Strong knowledge of medical terminology, particularly cardiovascular terminology.

•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred

•    Prior experience in cardiology, internal medicine, or a related specialty.

•    Familiarity with Holter monitors, event monitors, and ambulatory cardiac monitoring workflows.

•    Experience with patient intake/check-in platforms (e.g., Phreesia).

•    Bilingual (English plus Gujarati, Hindi, Spanish, or another commonly spoken language) is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•    Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical environment while maintaining attention to detail.

•    Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize competing demands.

•    Comfort with technology, including EHR systems, patient portals, and basic troubleshooting.

•    Professional, empathetic, and patient-centered communication style.

•    Team-oriented mindset with the ability to take initiative independently.

•    Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

This position is performed primarily in a clinical office setting. The Medical Assistant must be able to:

•    Stand, walk, and remain on their feet for extended periods during the clinic day.

•    Lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds occasionally (e.g., supplies, equipment, assisting patients).

•    Bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive hand and wrist motions.

•    Communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing.

•    Work safely with cleaning chemicals, medical equipment, and potentially infectious materials, using appropriate PPE.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

Performance Expectations

The Medical Assistant will be evaluated on, but not limited to:

•    Accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation.

•    Adherence to clinical protocols and compliance standards.

•    Patient experience and feedback.

•    Responsiveness to patient and provider communications.

•    Reliability, attendance, and professionalism.

•    Teamwork and contribution to overall clinic operations.
