Position Summary: The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is seeking a Copy Writing Intern (late August through December term) to support promotional efforts for the museum and the MIM Music Theater. Working closely with the Copy Writer and members of the creative team, the intern will gain hands-on experience in brand-focused messaging, narrative development, and creative storytelling in a nonprofit arts environment.

To apply, qualified candidates should submit a résumé, cover letter, and 2–3 writing samples (articles, blog posts, newsletters, etc.) in one merged document.

Responsibilities/Essential Duties:

  • Write copy for a variety of MIM marketing materials, such as promotional emails, program collateral, and advertisements.
  • Brainstorm, research, and compile content for use in MIM’s communications, such as the museum member publication, email newsletter, blog posts, and more.
  • Assist with interviews and narrative development for articles and blog posts.
  • Maintain organized internal records and databases.
  • Ensure accurate information and maintain brand voice in written materials.
  • Collaborate with multiple departments to support consistent, strategic messaging.
  • Proactively tour the museum galleries and attend MIM programs to build and maintain institutional awareness for promotional efforts.
  • Assist with additional tasks and projects as needs arise.
  • General Expectations: Maintain regular attendance and punctuality. Follow all policies and procedures. Cultivate inclusive and respectful working relationships that support a sense of belonging for all team members, volunteer team members, and guests. Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Qualifications: Current student enrolled in an accredited degree program, or a recent college graduate.

  • Strong writing, research, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Previous experience or coursework in copy writing, creative writing, or communications preferred but not required.
  • A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in writing or a related field.

Other: This is a paid, part-time internship based on-site at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Interns are expected to work approximately 20–24 hours per week. Scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated to accommodate both the intern’s academic commitments and the department’s needs. Compensation is at the current Arizona state minimum wage.
