Job description

Founding General Manager

Mission

At Municipal, our mission is to help others WIN THE DAY, TODAY—to discover their strength and build better lives. Backed by Mark Wahlberg and powered by EōS Fitness, we’re building world-class, wellness-integrated training centers where serious training is paired with premium amenities, spotless standards, and genuine hospitality.

Role Summary

As General Manager, you’ll lead the gym’s overall performance and day-to-day execution. You’ll develop and coach department leaders (Sales, Operations, and Fitness), raise the bar on service and standards, and build the operating rhythms that keep the gym running smoothly, cleanly, and consistently—so members love coming back and the team is proud of the environment they run.

This role is based at Municipal Gym’s founding location, where the brand began. You’ll help set the standard for how we train, operate, and show up for our community as we grow. As our first General Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in an exciting brand built with the intention to grow—with locations already secured 2 more states.

Team

  • Reports to: Municipal CEO
  • Dotted line to: Local Senior Leadership (EōS Fitness) — operational support and resources
  • Direct Reports: Membership Director, Operations Director and Personal Training Director

Key Outcomes (First 6–12 Months)

  • Achieve the gym’s growth and profitability goals by managing staffing, scheduling, and expenses with discipline—while protecting a premium member experience.
  • Build, coach, and retain a strong leadership team so the gym runs confidently day-to-day with clear ownership and minimal escalation.
  • Establish consistent operating rhythms (floor leadership, weekly business reviews, and service-recovery routines) that keep standards high and issues resolved fast.

Core Responsibilities

Business & Financial Leadership

  • Own the business results for the gym—driving revenue while managing labor, scheduling, and expenses with discipline to hit performance goals.
  • Execute pricing and promotion plans with leadership to drive membership growth and strengthen the gym’s local position.
  • Run a safe, well-controlled operation by following company policies and consistently executing standards around safety, incident reporting, and cash handling.

Member Experience & Brand Execution

  • Lead the in-gym experience end-to-end—from front desk to fitness floor to amenities—so service feels welcoming and standards stay high.
  • Use feedback (surveys, reviews, and real-time recovery) to prioritize fixes and follow through until the member sees the improvement.
  • Represent Municipal locally building community presence and partnerships that increase awareness and drive membership interest.

Leadership & Talent

  • Lead and develop your department leaders (Sales, Operations, and Fitness) through clear goals, coaching, and consistent follow-through.
  • Hire great people, onboard them well, and build strong training habits so new team members ramp quickly and standards stay high.
  • Create a “Win the Day” culture of accountability, optimism, and teamwork—recognizing great performance and addressing issues directly.

Operational Excellence

  • Set and run the team rhythm—daily huddles, weekly check-ins, and monthly scorecards—to keep priorities clear and execution tight.
  • Maintain a clean, fully working gym by partnering with facilities/maintenance and closing out issues quickly.
  • Manage key vendor relationships and ensure the gym meets all local requirements that support a safe, reliable operation.

KPIs / Scorecard Examples

  • Growth: membership revenue and add-on revenue, new member joins, conversion, retention, and net member growth
  • Profitability & efficiency: operating profit (performance vs. plan), labor %, key operating expenses, and cost to acquire a new member
  • Member experience: NPS, speed of issue resolution, and cleanliness/service audit results
  • People & leadership: leadership retention, bench strength for key roles, and hourly team turnover

Qualifications

  • 5+ years leading multi-department operations while owning business results (e.g., premium fitness, hospitality, private club, or multi-unit retail).
  • Proven track record of driving growth while delivering a high-quality guest/member experience and managing staffing levels responsibly.
  • Strong people leadership skills: hiring, coaching, setting clear expectations, and holding the team accountable.
  • Comfortable using dashboards and scorecards to run the business, communicate priorities, and lead with confidence in a premium environment.

Requirements

  • Full-time; evenings/weekends as needed.
  • Regular computer work required; proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Physical requirements: walk the gym floor, stand for long periods, occasionally lift/move ~40 lbs.

Compensation

$110,000-$130,000 DOE +bonus (annualized estimated at 25% of base)
