Job description

Overview

The Middlesex County Office of Parks and Recreation seeks an energetic and motivated individual to assist in the management of Open Space parcels throughout Middlesex County.  The Middlesex County Open Space and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund has preserved over 8000 acres since its inception in 1998.  The Open Space Steward/ Youth Corps Supervisor will carry out the objectives set forth in the management plans for these parcels.  They will assist in the management of volunteers and students in the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps.  

  • Civil Service Title: Recreation Leader 

Examples of Work:

  • Conduct natural resource stewardship on open space acquired through the Middlesex County Open Space Trust Fund.
  • Carry out management objectives for open space parcels including trail maintenance, invasive species management & elimination, native plant restoration, wildlife habitat projects and trash & litter removal.
  • Assist in the recruitment and management for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps
  • Assist in the management of volunteer projects.
  • Assist in open space acquisition projects as needed.

 Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in the Natural Sciences, Forestry, Conservation, Natural Resources Management, or Park Management, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in natural resource management, environmental education, parks and trail maintenance or related field.
  • Knowledge of local flora & fauna.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team is necessary.
  • Experience with trail maintenance tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid drivers license and willingness to operate large vehicles and power tools.
  • Willingness to work Saturdays as required.
  • Chainsaw experience preferred.
  • First Aid, CPR, Wilderness First Responder training a plus.
  • Experience with GIS and Esri products a plus.
  • Pesticide application experience.

Responsible To:  Open Space Coordinator & Conservation Corps Coordinator

Compensation: $50,953, commensurate with experience
