Job description

Senior Writer & Content Strategist
Full-Time | HYBRID | Randolph, MA
Help Tell the Stories That Matter
At May Institute, our employees support children and adults with autism, brain injury, developmental disabilities, and other neurobehavioral disorders across schools, homes, residential programs, day habilitation programs, and community-based services throughout Massachusetts.
Every day, extraordinary things happen across our organization. Lives change. Milestones are reached. Families find support. Employees make a difference.
We are growing something special at May - a high-performing internal marketing agency dedicated to telling the stories that matter most in human services. We're looking for a talented, mission-driven Senior Writer & Content Strategist to play a defining role in that effort - serving as the primary editorial voice and storytelling authority for one of the most important missions in behavioral health.
In this role, you'll serve as a primary storyteller and editorial voice for May Institute-creating content that informs, inspires, and connects people to our mission. You'll work closely with marketing leadership to shape how we communicate with employees, families, referral sources, donors, job seekers, and the communities we serve.
This is more than a writing role. It's an opportunity to help people understand the impact of the work we do every day.
What You'll Do
Tell meaningful stories: Interview employees, leadership, families, and program participants to uncover and share stories that highlight May Institute's mission and impact.
Create content across multiple channels: Write engaging content for websites, email campaigns, publications, social media, recruitment marketing, internal communications, and organizational initiatives.
Shape our organizational voice: Help maintain a consistent, authentic voice across all content while adapting messaging to different audiences and communication goals.
Lead content strategy efforts: Partner with marketing leadership to plan editorial calendars, prioritize content initiatives, and ensure messaging aligns with organizational objectives.
Support major digital initiatives: Play a key role in the ongoing development and growth of May Institute's website and the National Autism Center website through content planning, writing, and optimization.
Drive employee communication and engagement: Create content for the Maytrix intranet and other internal communication channels that keep employees informed and connected.
Maintain editorial excellence: Develop messaging guidelines, content standards, and editorial resources that strengthen consistency and quality across the organization.
This Role Is Strategic & Creative
This isn't a role focused solely on writing articles or updating webpages.
You'll help shape how May Institute communicates its mission, engage audiences through meaningful content, and bring clarity to complex topics through powerful storytelling.
We're looking for someone who can think strategically, write exceptionally well, and help ensure every piece of content serves a purpose.
Why This Role Matters
Stories have the power to build understanding, inspire action, and connect people to a mission.
The content you create will help families find services, prospective employees discover meaningful careers, donors understand their impact, and communities learn about the life-changing work happening across May Institute.
Your words will help amplify the voices of the people we serve and the employees who support them every day.
That's a powerful opportunity-and an incredibly meaningful role to play.
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, or a related field
• 4-6 years of experience in writing, content strategy, journalism, communications, or a related role
• Exceptional writing and editing skills across digital and print formats
• Experience developing content strategies and managing editorial calendars
Strong interviewing skills and the ability to uncover compelling stories
• Ability to write for multiple audiences while maintaining a consistent organizational voice
Highly organized, self-directed, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Portfolio Required: Applicants must submit a writing portfolio demonstrating experience across multiple formats and audiences, including long-form content, digital communications, editorial writing, or similar work.
Bonus Points For
• Experience in nonprofit, healthcare, education, or human services communications
• Experience contributing to website redesigns, content migrations, or large-scale digital projects
• Familiarity with SEO and web content best practices
• Familiarity with autism services, developmental disabilities, behavioral health, or special education
• Experience developing brand messaging frameworks or organizational voice standards
What We Offer
• Competitive salary based on experience- $85,000-$92,000
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance
• 403(b) retirement plan with employer match
• Generous paid time off and holidays
• Tuition reimbursement and student loan support after 1 year
• Professional development opportunities
• Employee Assistance Program and wellness resources
• A collaborative, mission-driven culture centered around growth, compassion, and impact
