Full-Time School Security Officer

Position Summary

The School Security Officer is responsible for supporting a safe, secure, orderly, and welcoming school environment for students, staff, families, and visitors. This position maintains a highly visible presence throughout the school campus, monitors entrances and exits, assists with arrival and dismissal procedures, supervises common areas, responds to safety concerns, and works closely with school administration to support established safety and security procedures.

The ideal candidate is professional, dependable, observant, approachable, and able to remain calm and exercise sound judgment in a fast-paced school environment. This individual should understand that school security requires a balance of safety, vigilance, professionalism, and positive interactions with students and families.

Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesCampus Safety & Security
  • Maintain a visible and active security presence throughout the school campus.
  • Regularly patrol assigned areas, including hallways, stairwells, entrances, exits, parking areas, cafeterias, outdoor spaces, and other common areas.
  • Monitor the campus for unauthorized individuals, unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, and potential security concerns.
  • Ensure exterior doors, gates, and other designated access points remain secured in accordance with school procedures.
  • Immediately report safety hazards, suspicious behavior, unauthorized visitors, or security concerns to administration.
  • Assist administration during emergencies, drills, evacuations, lockdowns, and other safety-related situations.
  • Follow all school emergency response and crisis-management procedures.
  • Document and report incidents accurately and promptly when required.
Arrival & Dismissal
  • Assist with daily student arrival and dismissal procedures.
  • Maintain an active security presence at designated entrances, exits, parking lots, and student drop-off/pick-up areas.
  • Help maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle movement on school property.
  • Monitor students entering and leaving campus and immediately address or report unauthorized departures.
  • Assist with maintaining orderly student movement during high-traffic periods.
  • Help ensure that students are released and exit campus according to established school procedures.
Student & Campus Monitoring
  • Actively monitor hallways, staircases, restrooms/bathroom areas, cafeteria areas, and other student common spaces.
  • Monitor student movement during transitions between classes.
  • Identify students who are in unauthorized locations and appropriately redirect them according to school procedures.
  • Support school administration with maintaining an orderly campus environment.
  • Respond promptly when requested by administrators or staff for safety or security assistance.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and use respectful, appropriate communication when interacting with students.
  • Refer disciplinary matters to the appropriate administrator rather than independently assigning disciplinary consequences unless specifically authorized to do so.
Visitor & Access Control
  • Monitor designated school entrances and access points.
  • Assist with ensuring that visitors follow established check-in and identification procedures.
  • Prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing restricted areas of the campus.
  • Politely redirect parents, visitors, vendors, and other individuals to the appropriate office or location.
  • Immediately notify administration when an individual refuses to follow school access or visitor procedures.
Emergency Response
  • Respond promptly to accidents, disturbances, fights, medical emergencies, safety concerns, and other incidents.
  • Immediately contact school administration and/or emergency personnel according to established protocols.
  • Assist with securing areas when an incident occurs.
  • Help maintain safe distances between students and potentially dangerous situations.
  • Preserve incident areas when necessary and follow administrative or law-enforcement direction.
  • Participate in required emergency preparedness training and school safety drills.
Communication & Documentation
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with school administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and visitors.
  • Communicate security concerns to administration promptly.
  • Complete incident reports and other required documentation accurately and objectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, investigations, disciplinary matters, and other sensitive school information.
  • Participate in security meetings, trainings, and staff meetings when requested.

  • Follow the direction of school administration and established school safety procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality at all times.
  • Serve as a positive and professional representative of the school.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience in security, school safety, law enforcement, military service, public safety, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a school or youth-centered environment preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students and adults.
  • Ability to recognize potential safety and security concerns and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of the school administrative and safety team.
  • Must successfully complete all background screening, fingerprinting, and other employment requirements applicable to the position.
  • Must complete any required school safety, emergency response, or security training.
Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the school day.
  • Frequently patrol multiple areas and floors of the campus.
  • Navigate stairs and indoor and outdoor areas.
  • Work outdoors during arrival, dismissal, and other assigned duties as necessary.
  • Respond quickly to incidents occurring in different areas of the campus.
  • Perform other physical duties reasonably associated with maintaining school safety and security.
Work Schedule

This is a full-time, on-campus position. The employee must be available during the school's established operating hours, including student arrival and dismissal. Additional hours may occasionally be required for school events, emergencies, trainings, meetings, or other campus needs.
