About the Organization

The Mountain Sky Conference of The United Methodist Church connects and supports more than 310 churches and ministries, nearly 45,000 members, and approximately 350 clergy across Colorado, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and part of Idaho. Guided by a mission of grace, inclusion, and service, the Conference provides leadership, resources, and shared infrastructure that help local congregations strengthen their ministries, serve their communities, and create places where all people feel welcomed, valued, and empowered.

The Opportunity

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) oversees Conference finances in accordance with The United Methodist Church’s Book of Discipline and works closely with Bishop Kristin G. Stoneking and her Cabinet. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in fund and nonprofit accounting, along with the strategic perspective to guide forecasting, budgeting, reporting, audits, investments, and internal controls. Leading a four-person finance team, the CFO will steward Mission Shares, administer clergy pension and benefits programs, and promote transparency and strong financial stewardship throughout the Conference.

This highly relational role works across a complex network of churches, clergy, lay leaders, boards, committees, and Conference staff. The CFO must be equally comfortable addressing practical payroll questions, advising leadership on strategic decisions, and presenting the Conference budget to hundreds of clergy and lay members. For a skilled financial leader energized by mission and inspired by faith-based service, this is a distinctive opportunity to apply their expertise in support of churches and communities throughout the Mountain Sky region.

Location, Compensation and Benefits

The Mountain Sky Conference office is located in Centennial, Colorado, in the Denver metropolitan area. The CFO will work in a hybrid environment, with an expected presence in the office approximately two days per week to collaborate with colleagues and support the work of the Conference. Candidates outside the region who are open to relocating to the Denver area are encouraged to apply, with flexibility around the timing of relocation. The role also includes periodic travel throughout the Conference’s five-state region and in-person participation in key meetings, events, and the Annual Conference.

The anticipated salary range is $120,000 - $150,000, commensurate with the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications. Mountain Sky Conference offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental and vision coverage; a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match; paid life and disability insurance; generous paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave; and paid family and medical leave.
