Job description

President MLK Community Health Foundation

The President of the MLK Community Health Foundation is responsible for the leadership and sound fiscal and operational management of all Foundation program activities in support of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital’s mission. Working closely with the Hospital CEO and the Foundation Board of Directors, the President establishes the Foundation’s strategic direction, along with priorities, major policies, principles and values under which the Foundation will conduct its work. The President ensures effective strategies and implementation to achieve private resources for inpatient care and community health; builds and leads the fundraising and volunteer leader teams; and contributes actively as a member of the Hospital’s executive team. The President leads Foundation responsiveness to Hospital priorities and community needs, and serves as an advocate throughout Los Angeles for the Hospital’s care and prevention programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Guides the Board of Directors and Hospital executives in the development and implementation of philanthropic resource plans;
  • Establishes progressively ambitious fundraising goals, with particular attention to long‑term results;
  • Ensures accountability for achievement of fundraising and programmatic targets;
  • Serves as the Foundation’s chief fundraising officer and spokesperson;
  • Identifies, recruits and leads a seasoned and diverse fundraising staff, collaboratively working toward the achievement of annual and long‑term goals;
  • Working with the Foundation’s Board Chair and the Hospital CEO, strategically expands the Foundation’s Board of Directors; ensures their engagement with the Foundation and Hospital mission; and supports their leadership in achieving influence and resources for Foundation and Hospital priorities;
  • Ensures that programs and infrastructure are appropriately determined and built to serve long‑term needs and to provide a robust platform for Foundation operations and growth;
  • Conducts all of the above consistently within the standards and ethics of the nonprofit executive profession.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS B. Qualifications/Experience
  • 20+ years of progressively responsible experience as a development professional in the nonprofit sector;
  • 15+ years building and leading staff teams to consistently positive results;
  • 10+ years board development;
  • Demonstrated program initiative and implementation.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal; leadership and collaboration;
  • Strategic planning, goal‑setting and management for results;
  • Expertise in strategies to create annual giving, major gifts and planned giving programs;
  • Technical knowledge in donor analytics, research, gift and donor management systems;
  • Knowledge of the donor community throughout Los Angeles in all sectors—foundation, corporate, individual.
