Job description

General Purpose of Position: An underground construction laborer plays a critical role in installing and maintaining Fiber Optic network infrastructure. The position is responsible for performing manual labor and operating specialized tools to assist in excavation and utility installation projects. This role works closely with equipment operators and skilled tradespeople to ensure that underground systems are placed accurately and safely in various terrains and weather conditions.
Essential Job Duties:
  • Excavation and Trenching: Digging trenches manually with shovels and picks or assisting with mini-excavators to prepare ground for ducts and vaults.
  • Utility Installation: Placing conduit, cables, and pipes into trenches; installing couplers, anchors, pedestals, and vaults.
  • Site Support: Loading and unloading construction materials, tools, and equipment from delivery vehicles.
  • Utility Locating: Assisting in potholing and using specialized tools to locate existing underground obstructions to prevent damage.
  • Restoration: Backfilling holes, compacting soil with earth tampers, and restoring landscaping or pavement once installation is complete.
  • Safety Maintenance: Cleaning work areas to remove hazards, setting up traffic barricades, and adhering to strict OSHA safety protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Physical Strength: Ability to lift and carry heavy loads (typically 50 to 80 lbs) regularly throughout a shift.
  • Stamina and Agility: Capacity to stand, walk, kneel, and crawl in confined or tight spaces for extended periods.
  • Technical Familiarity: Experience with hand and power tools such as jackhammers, saws, air compressors, and tamping equipment.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, or rain.
  • Certifications: A valid driver's license is required; OSHA 10-hour training or a Class A CDL is preferred.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED is preferred.

Work Environment: This role involves high-intensity physical labor in an outdoor environment. Laborers often work near heavy machinery and in trenches at varying depths, requiring constant awareness of safety hazards such as gas leaks or electrical lines. Schedules may include full-time hours with occasional overtime, weekends, or emergency on-call shifts.
