OPTHALMOLOGY TECHNICIAN

SITE OF SERVICE

Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, Joint Base San Antonio - Lackland, San Antonio, Texas 78236; and Joint Base San Antonio Military Treatment Facilities at 1100 Wilford Hall Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX 78236

HOURS

Monday through Friday, 0730-1630, within MTF hours of operation 0600-1800; 9-hour shift with 1-hour unpaid lunch; no weekends; no call; no telework; federally recognized holidays are non-duty days if not required to work.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Ophthalmology Technician/Technologist supporting Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center serves patients in a military treatment facility where ophthalmic support directly contributes to readiness and access to care. This role supports optometry and ophthalmology services, including patient preparation, surgical assistance, equipment support, and clinical/administrative tasks in a mission-focused environment.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School Diploma.

Experience: Five years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after COA, COT, or COMT certification from JCAHPO.

Certification: Current certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

Citizenship: U.S. Citizen.

Language: English

DUTIES:

· Provides a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist and ophthalmologist appropriate to the level of certification.

· Instructs patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.

· Prepares patients and performs as a surgical assistant in ophthalmic surgery and minor surgical procedures.

· Orders and maintains ophthalmologic medications, supplies, and equipment for use by the physician.

· Performs routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.

· Maintains and performs periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment.

· Performs user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment.

· Performs calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment and documents calibration according to equipment specifications.

· Assists in administrative and clinical duties when not actively working in patient care.

· Maintains cleanliness per infection control MDWI 44-157.

· Performs inventory weekly or as needed.

· Documents care and clinical support activities in the applicable government system/EHR used at the facility.

BASE DOWN DAYS

The facility observes installation training holidays and base down days. The contractor shall not be required

to work on these days and will not receive additional compensation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS SKILLS

Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Team work skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
