Job description

Job Requirements

Starting Pay Rate:  $19.00 hourly

Serve as the critical link between the public and emergency response teams in a fast-paced communications environment. This role is ideal for someone who thrives under pressure, communicates clearly, and is passionate about helping others. You'll coordinate emergency and non-emergency responses, dispatch field units, monitor critical systems, and ensure rapid, accurate communication to keep the community safe. Strong multitasking skills, sound judgment, and a calm, professional demeanor are essential for success in this high-impact position.

 

What does a Police Communications Specialist do?              

         Receives incoming calls for service, enters appropriate information into the computer-aided dispatch system, and forwards to the appropriate patrol unit. 

         Evaluates the need to dispatch a patrol unit/emergency service provider by determining the exact nature of the incident and the geographic location.

         Dispatches appropriate units by radio and relays necessary information concerning nature and location of the emergency.

         Coordinates communications for multi-unit response in emergencies, disasters, criminal situations or pursuits; contacts special units, investigators and supervisors as needed. 

         Establishes a priority code for dispatching units to the scene.

         Advises all units of all special broadcasts concerning wanted subjects within their jurisdiction.

         Contacts tow companies to request removal service at the scene of motor vehicle accidents or disabled vehicles.

         Operates New York State Police Information Network (NYSPIN) which is linked to the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) which allows for the entry, removal and inquiry on stolen vehicles/articles, missing/wanted persons and vehicle registrations/driver license confirmations.

         Maintains detailed records of the nature, location and time of all calls, the units dispatched and the disposition of calls.

         Maintains data logs to include calls for service, property checks, towed vehicle logs, and outside agency contact reports.

         Identifies problems/malfunctions which may occur on equipment; does preventive maintenance on some equipment.

         Makes copies of all incoming teletype messages that are of special interest to department personnel.

         Assists Nation Telecommunications personnel with alarm verification.

         Maintains an understanding and familiarity with all communications policies and procedures.

Work Experience

To be successful as a Police Communications Specialist, you'll need:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of alarm activations (e.g., burglar, fire, time delay, etc.).
  • Knowledge of geographical area, boundaries, and jurisdictions.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials procedures.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment including computer, fax, printer, telephone system, surveillance cameras, VCR, radios, etc.
  • Ability to guide behavior through effective communication.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Ability to listen and comprehend effectively.
  • Ability to use common sense to address issues.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Desire to help others.
  • Self-motivation to deal with issues in a timely fashion.
  • Must possess valid driver's license.
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 11 - 20  pounds.
