Summary:
Under the direction of the Librarian, the Library Assistant supports the daily operation of the school library by assisting students with independent book selection, supporting classroom research projects, maintaining and organizing library materials, monitoring circulation records, and assisting with instructional activities and other library operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This list is intended to be illustrative rather than comprehensive. It identifies the primary duties and responsibilities of this position but does not include every task that may be assigned. Employees are expected to maintain regular attendance and perform other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Assist students with independent book selection.
  • Support classroom research projects in collaboration with the Librarian.
  • Assist the Librarian with implementing library lessons.
  • Run and review overdue reports and distribute overdue notices.
  • Maintain and update library materials by entering items into the library management system, printing barcodes, stamping materials, attaching barcode and spine labels, and covering books.
  • Repair library materials.
  • Unpack and process new library materials.
  • Shelve library materials.
  • Pull materials for classroom and teacher use.
  • Weed outdated, damaged, or obsolete library materials.
  • Assist with up to two book fairs each school year.
  • Label library shelves and shift collections as needed.
  • Train and assist parent volunteers.
  • Assist with library inventory.
  • Create and maintain library bulletin boards and displays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, abilities, and educational requirements necessary for the position.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology for communication, research, and library-related functions.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with students, teachers, administrators, parents, support staff, and community members.
The qualified candidate must be able to:
  • Frequently use hands and fingers to handle, operate, and manipulate objects, tools, and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively through speaking and hearing.
  • Sit for extended periods and occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Possess visual abilities including close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lift, carry, and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Exercise sound judgment, planning, and interpersonal skills while working effectively under deadlines and periods of increased activity.
Reporting Relationships:
  • Reports directly to the Building Principal.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, supervisors, staff, parents, and community members to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Terms of Employment:
  • This is a 10 month position. (180 days)
  • Salary (step/level placement) & benefits are as described in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
