Operations Manager - temporary (Sept-Oct 2026)

Job Description

Background: Libertas is a public charter school serving the Frayser neighborhood in Memphis. Our mission is to be a school for human flourishing: cultivating minds, hands, and hearts for lives of wonder, work, and love. We offer a rich, rigorous, personalized liberal arts education through the method of Dr. Maria Montessori, with an attachment village of family supports. The state has twice named Libertas a Reward School - a top 15% public school. We currently serve infant and toddler through elementary at our founding location and a middle school on a second campus. Role information

• Summary : this is a temporary role (late August / early September through October) covering the parental leave of a key team member who provides direct service and customer assistance for non-academic systems so that students, staff, and families can flourish.
• Schedule : Full-time, year-round. 2 weeks’ paid vacation plus designated parts of breaks. Hours vary by campus; 8 hour work day (8.5 hours with 30 minute lunch) starting between 7:30/8:00, finishing between 4:00/4:30. Plus one hour a week of PD time. Participates in some events outside those hours.
• Compensation : Salary $25-$40 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
• Reports to: Director of Operations
• Key relationships : principal, dean, finance, family engagement, and operations teams, student enterprise (career/technical education) staff, vendors and service partners.

• Reliability of purchasing, cleaning, food service, transportation, safety and other services
• 85% stakeholder satisfaction across operations / support services
• 90% response and resolution rates on operations help desk
• Timely, thorough completion of operations project milestones
• On track to budget targets; all documentation submitted on time
• Compliance with all applicable rules and policies
• Satisfactory performance evaluations

Key responsibilities

• Administration : Serve as the main day-to-day on-site contact for campus operations. Receive help desk requests, resolve them or assign to others, monitor data, communicate updates. Escalate issues to ensure resolution. Conduct regular walk-throughs to proactively identify needs to resolve. Serve as point of contact for various vendors and service providers, coordinating access and monitoring their completion of planned work.
• Procurement : Plan and purchase goods and services in accordance with financial policies. Research vendors for price and quality. Track timely delivery and distribute orders. With office staff, proactively monitor inventory. Code purchases and submit documentation to accounting software. Plan and monitor spending in designated categories. Support extended learning and student enterprise staff in managing their program materials.
• Logistics : Create clear, workable written plans for logistics such as arrival/dismissal, staff, visitor and student parking, dining, family events, field trips, conferences, testing administration, etc. Help implement when needed by activities such as setting up traffic cones, distributing schedules or supplies, supervising students during transition times, etc.
• Technology : coordinate with IT consultant to meet teacher and student needs such as device ordering, distribution, inventory, security, maintenance; projectors; online testing, coursework, postsecondary applications; internet access; printers; phones; copiers; user training. When needed, provide tier 1 support: e.g. reset passwords, fix jammed copiers, etc. Interact with vendor on behalf of staff for escalated needs.
• Facilities : interface with the custodial, grounds, and contracted cleaning and maintenance vendors as needed for maintenance and janitorial matters. Proactively identify issues, ensure specified work is done up to quality standards, and escalate issues for resolution. Do light maintenance tasks as needed: changing light bulbs or ceiling tiles, unclog plumbing fixtures, change air filters, etc.
• Safety : Support creation and implementation of annual safety plan. Facilitate safety drills and procedures. With support of vendors, operate security alarm, cameras, and fire system. Coordinate building access for events outside of regular hours. Liaison with police, fire, and first responders when needed. Distribute and inventory keys and badges.
• Transportation: coordinate with bus provider to plan daily service and offsite learning.
• Nutrition : coordinate with nutrition services for food distribution, cleanup, field trips, etc.
• Other duties as assigned.

Competencies, traits, and qualifications

• Preferred experience in schools (teaching or operations), nonprofits or small business in one or more of the operational areas listed above.
• Take initiative with a strong sense of ownership.
• Flexible and able to multi-task while staying organized and attentive to detail.
• Service orientation: “Nothing is not my job.” The successful candidate must be willing to serve personally when needed in the specific ways outlined above.
• Effective communication, including listening, writing, and speaking.
• Love of learning. Willing to give and receive feedback with a growth mindset.
• Type and format documents, send emails, enter and review information in spreadsheets, create basic presentations.
• Bend and lift 20 pounds, climb ladders.
