Role Description The Reading Specialist is a part-time, on-site role based in Walnut Creek, CA. This position focuses on providing individualized and small-group reading support to students, using evidence-based reading intervention strategies and structured literacy practices. Day-to-day responsibilities include assessing reading levels, designing tailored lesson plans, delivering direct instruction in reading comprehension and foundational literacy skills, and tracking student progress. The Reading Specialist will collaborate with caregivers and, when appropriate, teachers to share progress updates and adjust instructional strategies. The role also involves maintaining organized records, preparing materials, and contributing to a positive, supportive learning environment that aligns with Learning Tree Coach’s educational philosophy.

Qualifications

  • Ability and experience working with clients who are neurodiverse
  • Knowledge of educational assessment tools and methods for monitoring reading progress. Trained in programs such as Linda Mood Bell, Orton Gillingham approaches and/or Wilson.
  • Exceptionally organized and strong communication skills
  • Strong skills in Reading Comprehension and Literacy instruction, with the ability to support diverse learners.
  • Experience with Reading Intervention and Tutoring, including designing and implementing individualized reading plans.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Reading/Literacy, Special Education, or a related field (advanced training or certification in reading instruction is a plus).
  • Familiarity with differentiated instruction and curriculum development for literacy-focused programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and caregivers.
  • Organized, reliable, and able to work independently within an on-site, part-time schedule in Walnut Creek, CA.
