Job description

Pharmacy Technician — Contract (EPIC EHR Implementation Support)

Location: Sacramento, CA (on-site) Contract Length: 3–6 months Employment Type: Contract / Temporary, Full-Time Department: Pharmacy / Oncology Infusion Services

About the Role

Our client, a hospital health system currently undergoing an Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) implementation, is seeking experienced Pharmacy Technicians to support inpatient pharmacy operations during go-live and stabilization. This is a hands-on, on-site role requiring strong pharmacy operations knowledge in addition to Epic familiarity. Candidates should be comfortable working cross-functionally with pharmacists, IT/informatics teams, and revenue integrity staff to ensure a smooth transition to the new EHR while maintaining uninterrupted pharmacy service.

Required Experience

  • Epic EHR experience — prior use of Epic Willow, Beacon or Resolute) strongly preferred; comfort learning and adapting to new Epic workflows during go-live is essential.
  • Oncology Infusion IV Compounding — hands-on experience with sterile IV compounding of chemotherapy/hazardous medications within an oncology infusion services setting.
  • Pharmacy Procurement (Buyer) — experience functioning as a pharmacy buyer in either an inpatient pharmacy or oncology infusion services setting: ordering, receiving, inventory management, vendor coordination, and par-level maintenance.
  • 340B Program Audits — working knowledge of 340B drug pricing program compliance, including experience supporting or participating in 340B audits and split-billing accuracy checks.
  • Medication Waste Charge Tracking (JW & JZ Modifiers) — familiarity with documenting and charging discarded medication waste using JW and JZ modifiers; alternatively, direct experience entering med waste from a pharmacy operations perspective (not billing-only knowledge).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active California Pharmacy Technician license/registration (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
  • National certification (PTCB or ExCPA).
  • Prior experience supporting an Epic go-live, activation, or optimization project.
  • Strong understanding of USP <797>/<800> sterile compounding standards.
  • Experience working in a high-volume academic medical center or health system environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support inpatient pharmacy operations throughout Epic EHR go-live, including order verification, dispensing workflows, and IV room operations.
  • Perform pharmacy buyer duties: procurement, inventory reconciliation, and vendor/order management within Epic's pharmacy module (inpatient pharmacy or oncology infusion services).
  • Assist with 340B compliance activities, including transaction review and audit preparation.
  • Accurately document and charge medication waste using JW/JZ modifiers in accordance with CMS guidance and hospital policy.
  • Partner with pharmacy informatics, super-users, and IT teams to troubleshoot workflow issues during go-live and provide front-line feedback.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and support data integrity during the transition period.

Schedule

  • On-site presence required in Sacramento, CA for the full duration of the contract.
  • Shift schedule to be confirmed based on go-live coverage needs (may include evenings/weekends during initial go-live period).

This is a contract position with an anticipated duration of 3–6 months, based on project needs.
