Job Opportunity: Sheetmetal Mechanic
LEAD Staffing | Hampton Roads, VA
Salary: $20.66-$27.31/hr Based on Experience
Schedule: Full-Time | Contract | 40 hours per week (Overtime as required)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Sheetmetal Mechanic to support shipyard operations in, VA. This role focuses on fabricating and installing HVAC ducting, ventilation systems, and light-gauge sheetmetal assemblies aboard ship. Candidates must be comfortable working in active shipyard environments while meeting quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lay out, cut, form, and assemble sheetmetal components in accordance with blueprints and specifications.
  • Fabricate and install HVAC ducting, transitions, foundations, and related assemblies.
  • Seal and finish ducting and assemblies per shipboard and quality requirements.
  • Operate brakes, shears, punches, and other sheetmetal fabrication equipment.
  • Maintain proper fit, finish, and alignment of all installed components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Follow all shipyard safety procedures and quality standards.
Requirements
  • Minimum of 3 years of sheetmetal experience; marine or shipyard experience preferred.
  • Strong blueprint reading and layout skills.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and sheetmetal fabrication equipment.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be willing to undergo background check and drug screening.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and extended schedules as required.
  • Clean driving record required.
Work Environment
  • Shipyard and industrial settings
  • Exposure to noise, heat, cold, confined spaces, and marine/industrial hazards
  • PPE required at all times

  1. Describe your experience working as a Sheetmetal Mechanic in a shipyard or marine environment.
  2. What types of HVAC ducting or ventilation systems have you fabricated or installed?
  3. How do you ensure accuracy when laying out and cutting sheetmetal from prints?
  4. What fabrication equipment are you most experienced with (brakes, shears, punches, etc.)?
  5. How do you maintain proper fit and finish when installing ducting aboard ship?
  6. Describe a challenging sheetmetal project you've completed and how you handled it.
  7. How do you verify your work meets specifications before final installation?
  8. What safety precautions are most important when working with sheetmetal in confined spaces?
  9. How do you manage multiple fabrication or installation tasks under tight deadlines?
  10. How do you communicate issues or design conflicts to supervisors or engineers?
