Job description

Controls Specialist II

Location- Ackerman, MS Contract- 2 Years

Experience Requirement:

5–7 years of experience in a related controls, instrumentation, or electrical engineering field.

Position Summary

The Controls Specialist II is responsible for supporting a range of mid- to large-scale control system projects within a coal-fired electric generating plant. This role involves both office-based controls engineering and field support tasks such as equipment verification, system startup, and project walkdowns. The ideal candidate will have strong technical and interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate across multiple teams and vendors.

Key Responsibilities

Project Support & Transition

  • Support and transition between multiple mid- to large-sized control system projects.
  • Conduct and assist in site walkdowns for system planning, construction, and verification (travel required).
  • Prepare cost estimates, conceptual layouts, and designs for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Participate in system startup, providing hands-on support and troubleshooting.

Technical Field Work

  • Check and verify field wiring and cable routing.
  • Assist with field support activities, including review and mark-up of control narratives and diagrams.
  • Ensure proper installation, configuration, and testing of control systems and components.

Skill Sets & Expertise

  • Strong electrical knowledge and hands-on experience with power and control systems.
  • Proficient in computer-based control platforms with configuration and graphics experience in one or more of the following:
    • Ovation
    • Foxboro
    • ABB
    • PLC-based systems
  • Experience in:
    • Field support and wiring verification
    • Developing and reviewing control narratives and markup documentation
    • Cost estimating within control sub-disciplines
    • Developing IO (Input/Output) lists
    • Collaborating with plant staff, design engineers, and vendors

Work Environment

  • Location: Coal-fired electric generating plant
  • Environment Split:
    • Office (Controls/Engineering) – documentation, planning, design
    • Field (Plant Floor) – hands-on inspections, support, and walkdowns

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical tasks including:
    • Walking, climbing stairs, ladder climbing
    • Kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching
  • Comfortable working in industrial plant environments and tight spaces
