Job Title: Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor

Position Summary:

The Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor is responsible for providing direct counseling services to clients in a substance use disorder (SUD) treatment setting. The counselor performs assessments, develops individualized treatment plans, facilitates group and individual sessions, and ensures documentation meets clinical and regulatory standards. This role is critical in supporting clients through the recovery process while maintaining strict adherence to professional ethics and compliance guidelines.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Services:

• Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and determine ASAM placement.
• Develop and maintain individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the client and clinical team.
• Facilitate individual and group counseling using evidence-based practices (e.g., CBT, MI, relapse prevention).
• Provide psychoeducation on addiction, relapse prevention, mental health, and life skills.
• Monitor client progress and adjust treatment interventions as needed.

Case Management:

• Coordinate with outside providers for medical, psychiatric, legal, housing, employment, and other supportive services.
• Provide advocacy and referrals as appropriate.
• Support clients in developing and executing aftercare plans upon discharge.

Documentation & Compliance:

• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation, including progress notes, treatment plans, and discharge summaries.
• Ensure all documentation adheres to Title 22, DMC-ODS, and other regulatory/funding guidelines.
• Participate in utilization reviews, audits, and internal quality assurance activities.

Crisis Management:

• Provide immediate response to client relapse, psychiatric emergencies, or safety concerns.
• Escalate critical incidents appropriately and complete required incident documentation.

Professional Conduct:

• Always Uphold ethical boundaries and confidentiality (in accordance with CCAPP/CADTP/CAADE codes of conduct).
• Maintain certification in good standing with required continuing education units (CEUs).
• Participate in clinical supervision, team meetings, and ongoing training.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Active certification as a CATC, CADC, or equivalent from a California-recognized certifying body (CCAPP, CADTP, CAADE) or registered with an accredited program.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a substance use treatment setting (residential preferred).
• Working knowledge of ASAM criteria, DSM-5, Title 22, and DMC-ODS requirements.
• Strong clinical documentation skills and familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs).
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and high-acuity clients.
• Valid CPR/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
• Must pass criminal background check and TB screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Experience working with co-occurring disorders (mental health + SUD).
• Familiarity with trauma-informed care and harm reduction models.
