Job description

The Temporary Decking Technician is responsible for installing and maintaining temporary protective decking materials throughout vessels to protect finished deck surfaces from industrial foot traffic, equipment, and construction debris. This position supports shipyard and vessel operations by ensuring work areas are properly protected prior to maintenance, repair, and industrial activities. The Temporary Decking Technician works closely with Shipboard Services (SBS), shipyard representatives, and the Support Services Coordinator during vessel walkthroughs and installation efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install temporary decking and protective coverings throughout vessels in designated areas.
  • Participate in vessel walkthroughs with SBS personnel, shipyard representatives, and the Support Services Coordinator to identify installation requirements and work locations.
  • Ensure temporary decking is properly positioned, secured, and maintained to provide effective protection of vessel decks.
  • Protect deck surfaces from damage caused by industrial traffic, tools, equipment, and debris.
  • Perform installation activities in accordance with shipyard procedures, safety requirements, and project specifications.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment throughout the duration of the project.
  • Assist with material handling, preparation, removal, and repositioning of temporary decking materials as needed.
  • Communicate with supervisors and team members to ensure installations are completed efficiently and on schedule.
  • Support additional vessel preparation and support-service tasks as assigned.

Work Schedule

  • Temporary decking installation is performed Monday through Sunday, 1830–0230 (6:30 PM–2:30 AM).
  • Work schedules may include nights, weekends, and early-start assignments based on vessel availability and operational requirements.
  • Early-start operations are conducted at NOB/JEB and require coordination with authorized supervisory personnel.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work safely in a shipboard and industrial environment.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Ability to follow directions, safety procedures, and shipyard requirements.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to work assigned shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Requirements

  • Supervisors assigned to early-start operations must possess valid base access credentials (DBIDS).
  • Temporary employees may be assigned to supplement the workforce and support installation requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in shipyard operations, construction, industrial services, or vessel support.
  • Experience working aboard naval or commercial vessels.
  • Familiarity with shipyard safety practices and industrial work environments.
