The James River Association (JRA) is a nonprofit organization with a mission to protect the James River and connect people to it. We are seeking a Part-Time Accounting and Finance Coordinator to support JRA’s daily financial and administrative operations.

In this role, you will record financial transactions, process payments and deposits, assist with payroll administration, and help keep JRA’s Richmond office running smoothly. You will work closely with the Vice President of Finance and Operations and collaborate with teammates across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor bank activity and support Positive Pay processes.
  • Record ACH, check, cash, Stripe, PayPal, and other deposits in QuickBooks.
  • Enter vendor invoices, bank debits, bills, and journal entries.
  • Process accounts payable, including preparing checks, coordinating approvals, mailing payments, and maintaining documentation.
  • Distribute, collect, review, and enter monthly employee credit card reports.
  • Support biweekly payroll administration and timecard review through Paychex.
  • Assist with financial reports, grant coding, annual 1099s, audit preparation, and related finance administration.

  • Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting system.
  • Familiarity with accounts payable, deposits, payroll, or credit card reconciliation.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • College degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to manage recurring tasks, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential financial and employee information.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Regular availability during standard business hours.
  • Ability to work from JRA’s Richmond office for checks, deposits, mail, office operations, and other in-person responsibilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to JRA locations and events across the James River watershed when necessary.
  • Ability to periodically lift 40 lbs

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Paychex or another payroll and timekeeping platform.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit environment.
  • Familiarity with grant coding or restricted-fund accounting.
  • Experience supporting annual audits, 1099 preparation, or year-end financial activities.

Compensation and Work Environment: This position offers $25 per hour for up to 29 hours per week. The role provides a flexible, hybrid work environment, with regular in-person work at JRA’s Richmond office and occasional travel to JRA locations or events as needed.
