The Accounting Specialist is responsible for supporting the financial operations of the organization by leading, monitoring, and reviewing accounting implementation processes while ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and maintaining accurate financial records. This position serves as a key resource for continuous and improved processes in the Accounting Department and acts as the designated backup for the Accounts Payable Accounting Coordinator to ensure uninterrupted Accounts Payable Operations.

Essential DUTITES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include the following, and other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead and coordinate accounting implementation projects (including SAP Concur), system enhancements, process improvements, and financial reporting initiatives
  • Monitor and review accounting workflows to ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and organizational policies
  • Assist in the development, documentation, and maintenance of accounting procedures, internal controls, and process manuals
  • Analyze financial transactions and account activity to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper subpayor and GL classification
  • Support month-end and year-end closing processes by preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Review financial data and reports to identify discrepancies, recommend corrective actions, and improve accounting efficiencies
  • Collaborate with Fiscal Department and Department leaders to ensure accurate financial entries into the MIP system
  • Assist with audit preparation by compiling schedules, supporting documentation, and responding to auditor requests
  • Serve as the designated backup for the Accounts Payable Accounting Coordinator, including processing invoices, vendor payments, expense reimbursements, and maintaining vendor records
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of accounts payable transactions during staff absences or periods of increased workload
  • Participate in accounting system testing, implementation, and upgrades to ensure successful deployment and adoption is running smoothly and accurately
  • Provide support for internal and external audits as assigned

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting or Finance, required
  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in financial analysis, accounting, accounts payable, month-end closing, system implementation, audits
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including formulas and pivot tables)
  • Familiarity with accounting software MIP, preferred
