Summary
The Island County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking a part-time (on-call) Criminal Investigator. Our team of criminal prosecutors, paralegals, and staff are dedicated to protecting the public, seeking justice in every case, and maintaining public confidence in the skills and judgment of the office. We strive to set the highest standard for legal professionalism and ethics in Island County.
The Criminal Investigator reports directly to the Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney and serves at the pleasure of the Prosecuting Attorney. The qualified applicant will be able to work independently and with prosecution staff to conduct needed investigations, interviews, and trial preparation. The position requires travel and contact with witnesses both in and out of the office.
All applications must include a cover letter, resume, and investigative report writing sample.
Position is open until filled. Pay within range is dependent upon qualifications.
Job Duties
  • Perform follow-up investigations and witness interviews as directed by the Prosecutor and Deputy Prosecutors
  • Assist with case analysis
  • Prepare written reports of investigative actions
  • Collect statements, photos, videos, etc.
  • Locate victims and witnesses
  • Assist in preparation of materials and exhibits for trial
  • Act as technical advisor to prosecutors with respect to police investigations and procedures
  • Respond as necessary to major crime scenes to assist the prosecutor's office and police investigators
  • Testify in court proceedings as needed
  • Perform other tasks as directed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of commonly used legal terminology
  • Ability to communicate effectively with witnesses and law enforcement, both orally and in writing
  • Sensitivity to the needs of people in crisis
  • Ability to work independently and with prosecution staff
  • Competent computer knowledge across multiple platforms
  • Experience with open-source investigations
  • Thorough documentation & record keeping
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Experience testifying in court

Education, Experience & Certifications
  • Bachelor of Arts or Sciences Degree
  • Three to five years prior law enforcement experience, with at least one year in major crimes investigations
  • Valid Washington driver's license, proof of auto insurance, and acceptable driving record
