Position Skills, Abilities and Expectations:

  • Preferred Licensed Marriage Family Therapist or Licensed Professional Counselor with training and/or experience in child and adolescent development and adult learning.

  • Masters Degree or equivalent, in counseling, psychology or related field.

  • 2-4 years direct experience in counseling elementary and/or middle school aged children.

  • Knowledge of culture specific issues related to mental health.

  • Provides care that is culturally informed, developmentally appropriate, non-biased and responsive to local community needs.

  • Utilizes research and empirically-based clinical approaches.

  • Maintains high ethical standards regarding employee conduct and information sharing, as dictated by law, school policies and procedures, and professional discipline.

  • Maintains high standards regarding paperwork and recordkeeping.

  • Essential Job Functions:

  • As an essential part of the school administrative team, the counselor's role is to guide students in the development of life competencies and to support their emotional wellbeing.

  • We believe that there are key life skills that all students need to thrive. These skills prepare them to adapt to a rapidly changing world, make informed decisions, and build meaningful relationships, setting a strong foundation for lifelong success and fulfillment.

  • The counselor will work with teachers and our IB Coordinators to chart key life competencies across the curriculum (and report these to ISP) and to lead our continuing pilot of Second Step curriculum to strengthen the teaching of SEL and to build our campus capacity for SEL.

  • Complete intake and assessment interviews with students; gather history from various sources and identify presenting problems.

  • Initiate collaboration with school academic counselors, teachers, and administration. As needed to create treatment plans for students. Provide an ongoing progress update to team members, final outcomes, and follow up care.

  • Under supervision of on site, licensed therapist, and if registered with the state of California as a counseling intern, or in current graduate program, provide individual and or family therapy services to students.

  • Provide crisis management in person to immediately assist student or staff in order to de-escalate and contain a psychological emergency. Contact and liaison with emergency services in community as needed.

  • Organize and facilitate social and educational group lectures and workshops for students.

  • Research, refer and link clients and students to community resources for various physical and psychological needs.

Salary: $75K plus benefits.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

This is primarily an office/sedentary position. The position may require some degree of intermittent bending, stooping, reaching and stretching. The job may also require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. Access to a personal vehicle and local driving in and around Orange County is required.
