Tax Attorney

Position Summary

Five Star Tax Resolution is seeking an experienced and motivated Tax Attorney to represent individuals and businesses in resolving federal and state tax controversies. The Tax Attorney will provide legal analysis, develop resolution strategies, communicate directly with taxing authorities, and advocate on behalf of clients throughout the resolution process. This position requires exceptional knowledge of tax law, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to manage a high-volume caseload while delivering outstanding client service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state taxing authorities.
  • Analyze tax liabilities and develop customized resolution strategies.
  • Prepare and submit Offers in Compromise, Installment Agreements, Penalty Abatement requests, Innocent Spouse Relief claims, Currently Not Collectible (CNC) requests, and Appeals.
  • Review IRS transcripts, financial information, tax returns, and supporting documentation.
  • Negotiate directly with Revenue Officers, Revenue Agents, Appeals Officers, and IRS representatives.
  • Provide legal guidance regarding tax collection actions, liens, levies, wage garnishments, audits, and compliance matters.
  • Draft legal correspondence, memoranda, and other tax-related documents.
  • Ensure all cases comply with IRS regulations, Circular 230, and applicable federal and state laws.
  • Advise clients on tax compliance requirements and future tax planning to prevent recurring issues.
  • Work closely with case managers, enrolled agents, tax preparers, and support staff to ensure efficient case progression.
  • Maintain detailed case notes and documentation within the firm's case management system.
  • Participate in client consultations and explain legal options in a clear and professional manner.
  • Stay current on changes in federal and state tax laws, IRS procedures, and industry best practices.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law and in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Experience in tax controversy, tax resolution, or IRS representation preferred.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • IRS collection procedures
    • Federal tax law
    • Taxpayer rights
    • Circular 230
    • Tax Court procedures (preferred)
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and case management software.
  • Experience with IRS e-Services and transcript analysis is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • LL.M. in Taxation (preferred but not required).
  • Experience representing clients before the U.S. Tax Court.
  • Knowledge of state tax resolution procedures.
  • Prior experience in a tax resolution or tax controversy law firm.
