Role Overview

Responsible for operational management of the clinical laboratory, including direct leadership of technical associates and pre‑analytic supervision as needed. This position performs all levels of general testing within the analytical laboratory, provides a high level of technical knowledge, and applies it to testing and clinical relevance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the clinical laboratory’s operations, including direct leadership of technical associates.
  • Schedule staff and monitor workflow to ensure efficient laboratory operations.
  • Serve as a liaison with other laboratory departments and hospital services.
  • Select, hire, train, appraise performance, and take corrective action for associates.
  • Investigate and resolve occurrence reports, compiling various reports and resolving issues.
  • Receive specimens, assess priority, assure appropriate specimen identification and type.
  • Coordinate implementation and validation of new analyzers, ensuring proficiency testing is assigned, tested, and submitted.
  • Monitor quality metrics and processes to meet goals, facilitating investigation, follow‑up, and retraining with associates as needed.
  • Assist with resolution of unusual test orders by following up with reference lab, referring to lab leadership when appropriate.
  • Perform all levels of testing within the assigned discipline with a high level of competency, utilizing critical thinking skills to correlate and interpret data.
  • Lead and participate in laboratory performance improvement activities, promoting team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and safety.
  • Follow safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and complete required training for handling hazardous waste.
  • May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution.
  • Three or more years of work experience as a medical lab scientist.
  • Clinical Laboratory Supervisor (SU) – preferred.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS‑ASCP) – preferred.
  • Medical Lab Scientist (MLS‑AMT) – preferred.
  • Medical Technologist (MT‑AMT) – preferred.
  • Medical Technologist (MT‑ASCP) – preferred.
  • Medical Technologist (MTA‑AB) – preferred.
