The Akron Board of Education announces an opening for a Culinary Arts Instructor, Job Code 006, Time Schedule 380 (190 days), Salary TBD. Extended time may be required before and/or after the school year for this position which would be compensated at the hourly extended time rate. Collective Bargaining Unit- AEA. This is a State Teachers Retirement System position.

QUALIFICATIONS - Required: 

1. LICENSURE: You must meet one of the following licensure requirements:
   1. Currently hold a Culinary Arts (L0) teaching license issued by the state of Ohio, OR
   2. Currently hold a Career Technical Education (CTE) teaching credential where you are eligible to teach courses in the Family Consumer Science (FCS) pathway; OR
   3. Be eligible for acquiring a teaching license in the FCS or Culinary pathways, as documented by a current CTE-36, and complete the eligibility requirements as determined by the following levels of formal education and work experience:
      • Bachelor's Degree in Culinary Arts with evidence of at least two (2) years of recent/related work experience; OR
      • Associate's degree in Culinary Arts with evidence of at least three (3)  years of recent/related work experience; OR
      • High School Diploma or equivalent and evidence of at least five (5) years of recent work experience in Hospitality or Culinary Arts.
   4. Be a current teacher who is eligible to acquire the Family Consumer Science supplemental teaching license by currently holding:
      • a valid Ohio resident educator, professional, permanent, or five-year CTE license;
      • A Baccalaureate degree
      • Passing score on the FCS content-knowledge exam
        1. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of the content-knowledge exam and issuance of an FCS supplemental teaching license.
        2. New Hires working under the supplemental license will need to complete at least 2 years of mentored teaching in FCS. 
            
           
2. ADDITIONAL LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
   1. Obtain and keep current all instructional standards certifications, credentials or designations required by the state for career technical funding.
   2. Meet all district requirements for entry-year teachers, including the Four-Year Resident Educator and/or PAR requirements.
   3. Meet the State of Ohio CTE Quality Program Standards criteria
   4. Willing to attend the required third-party curriculum training. 

QUALIFICATIONS - Desired: 

• Experience teaching the Culinary Arts CTE Pathway Course Objectives and professional/employability skills at the secondary level.
• Five years of professional culinary or food service management experience.
• Experience in leading and guiding a team of people.
• A commitment to annually updating educational and trade skills.
• A commitment to working with students, professionals, and community members in a multicultural setting.
• Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

• Provide instruction in the Four Course sequenced Culinary Arts pathway and oversee all CTE-related programming and state-reported metrics.
• Plan and deliver learning experiences that advance the learning of each individual student, showing written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor;
• Design authentic learning experiences for students to learn core knowledge, 21st century skills, and literacies, through, but not limited to, collaboration, problem-based learning, inquiry, and integration of curriculum;
• Work with the Office of College and Career Academies and your Academy's Advisory Board to design, organize, and deliver skill- training program as outlined by the Quality Program Rubric.
• Assist all students to meet or exceed 21st-century knowledge and skills, including state academic achievement standards;
• Develop and implement differentiated instructional strategies for each student's academic growth;
• Assist in the development of courses' curriculum outlines, guides, and graded course of study utilizing the appropriate standards for the program in accordance with the guidelines of the Ohio Department of Education.
• Engage community and business partners as resources in curriculum development and student products.
• Uses technology to enhance instruction and develop student content knowledge and skills so students know how to learn, think critically, solve problems, use information, communicate, innovate, create, and collaborate;
• Uses continuous, authentic, and appropriate assessment and evaluation measures that are evidence-based and use them to improve instruction and student learning, and for feedback, including progress reports;
• Plan, instruct, and manage required student occupational opportunities through school- based learning, work-based learning, and connective activities. Examples include, but are not limited to, classroom instruction, speakers' bureau, field experiences, shadowing, internships, mentoring, college visits, early placement, advanced training options, and apprenticeships.
• Provide students pathways to further education, including instructional and/or support for dual enrollment and post-secondary options.
• Assist students in securing employment.
• Provide students with pathways to obtain industry certifications and credentials that are valuable in the culinary field.
• Be flexible, resourceful, innovative, and effectively manage the design and execution of learning experiences, both formal and informal;
• Creates a classroom environment that incorporates staff members from partnering organizations as an ongoing presence and is conducive to learning, fosters engagement, self-motivation, student self-direction, and positive social interaction;
• Develops reasonable rules of classroom behaviors and procedures and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner;
• Provides learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of the students;
• Work with the Local Professional Development Committee (LPDC) to develop an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP), as mandated by the State of Ohio, to maintain proper certification/license.
• Keep in close contact with student families through phone calls, visits, parent-teacher conferences, report card pickups, and written communications.
• Promote and participate in local, state, and national student organization activities.
• Assist students and counselors in developing and modifying students' Individual High School and Post Secondary plans, emphasizing the learning of the employability skills needed for students' plans.
• Provide students pathways to further education, including instructional and/or support for dual enrollment and post-secondary options.
• Work to improve student outcomes and test scores whenever possible, especially the Ohio State Tests (OST), Ohio CTE WebXam assessments, through practical applications of academic standards.
• Operate kitchen laboratories when open to customer service in accordance with industry-approved methods, incorporating acceptable business practices.
• Maintain a complete file of all necessary work permits, student identification material, internship, early placement material, which includes, but is not limited to, permission slips, training agreements, training plans, parent-student agreement, and documentation of employment supervision.
• Operate the laboratory/kitchen, when open to customer service (where applicable), in an industry-approved manner incorporating acceptable business practices.
• Complete necessary reports, forms, and accounting procedures for kitchen and classroom purchases as required by the building principal, Office of College and Career Academies, Auditor, and the Treasurer.
• Maintain an inventory of laboratory/kitchen supplies and equipment.
• Report to and carry out any other responsibilities as assigned by the building principal.
