Job description

Job Title: Tool & Die Technician
Location: Chelsea, MI
Shift: 2nd and 3rd shift
Compensation: $34.25-$35.25/hr

Job Summary:
The Tool & Die Technician will apply their knowledge and expertise in performing scheduled and unscheduled tool, die, and fixture fabrication, repair, and other tool & die maintenance-related activities. The Technician will participate in advanced troubleshooting activities and continuous improvement initiatives by providing appropriate technical knowledge to recommend and implement improvements and corrective actions. Technologies employed include stamping presses, robotic welding/assembly, and paint.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform troubleshooting activities, implement corrective actions, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure dimensional capability for various tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures associated with stamping press, MIG welding, paint, and robotic operations.
  • Respond to work orders and assure timely resolution of requests.
  • Fabricate new and repair replacement details for robots.
  • Build, assemble, and maintain fixtures.
  • Inspect and maintain existing tooling to ensure the production of quality products that comply with company and customer standards and specifications.
  • Fabricate production aids.
  • Monitor inventory of items required to perform necessary duties and submit procurement requests as required.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Comply with standardized work instructions and suggest improvements as appropriate.
  • Cooperate with internal and external certification audits and customer audits, supporting site initiatives towards achieving and maintaining customer awards as well as quality and environmental certifications (IATF, TS, ISO).
  • Adhere to Team Handbook, Quality, Safety, and Environmental standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure all safety devices are properly in place and utilized, PPE is worn correctly at all times, and report any near-misses, injuries, or accidents immediately.
  • Perform additional tasks as deemed necessary and appropriate.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of documented related experience; completion of an apprenticeship program and Department of Labor (DOL) issued Journeyman’s card is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a production stamping facility working with presses and heavy dies.
  • Working knowledge of machine shop equipment, including mills and surface grinders.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to read and interpret prints.
  • Ability to obtain Hilo and crane certifications.
  • Desire to work in a team-based, lean-manufacturing environment.
  • Willingness to travel for training and as other business needs may dictate.
  • Ability and willingness to work any shift, as well as overtime, as required to meet business requirements.
  • Ability to provide own basic precision and hand tools.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, talk, and hear.
  • Employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
