Job description

Engine Test Cell Dyno Technician

Pay: $28/hour

Path: Great opportunity that can lead to full-time direct with our client through Express Employment Professionals.

A day in the dyno cell

You roll into the lab, sync up with the lab manager, and review the day’s schedule. First up: calibrations. You set thermocouples and pressure transducers with care, prep sample engines to customer applications or specifications, and bring the test cell online. Power checks, fuel consumption runs, and governor stability sweeps follow—each captured with high-speed data acquisition and combustion analysis tools like AnD, AVL, and EFI calibration software.

Between test cycles, you process data in Microsoft Office, keep meticulous records, and flag insights that could shape the next round of testing—or even spark a design tweak. You collaborate with fellow technicians to coordinate work across shifts, check inventory so supplies don’t slow the queue, and tidy the test area so the next run starts clean.

What you’ll do
  • Set up instrumentation (thermocouples, pressure transducers) and execute required tests such as power checks, fuel consumption, and governor stability.
  • Perform basic setup and operation of high-speed data acquisition and combustion analysis software, including AnD, AVL, and/or EFI calibration software.
  • Observe, process, and report test data in Microsoft Office—highlighting insights that may influence future tests or uncover new information.
  • Maintain complete records of all scheduled and completed tests, including procedures and results.
  • Analyze data and recommend minor design modifications; suggest enhancements to test systems or procedures.
  • Provide occasional support for departmental audits; interface with outside suppliers and customers to ensure accurate testing and results.
  • Apply strong fabrication skills: operate a lathe, drill press, and welding equipment; read blueprints and engineering documents to prepare equipment and engine parts for testing.
  • Set up, maintain, and calibrate test equipment; notify your supervisor of maintenance or calibration needs; clean the test area and equipment after use.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate inventory of supplies; alert appropriate personnel when orders are needed.
  • Multi-task daily workload with prioritization from the lab supervisor and/or scheduler; coordinate activities with other technicians and communicate for smooth shift transitions.
  • Prepare sample engines and components for testing to customer applications or specifications as directed by an engineer.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Leverage advanced electromechanical equipment understanding in all aspects of testing and troubleshooting.
What you bring
  • High School diploma/GED required; Associate Degree preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with—and genuine passion for—combustion engines.
  • Test lab experience preferred (not required).
  • Proven ability to accurately document and report test results.
  • Great attitude, excellent communication, and strong attention to detail.
Core proficiencies
  • Engine Repair
  • Engine Performance
