Reports To: Department Director
Job Goal:
The Assistant Director, Texas Education Exchange will oversee the roadmap execution and delivery of Texas Education Exchange platform, products, and applications. This role works closely with Region 4 engineering, security, infrastructure, and vendors supporting the platform. The Assistant Director of the Texas Education Exchange plays a critical role in prioritizing initiatives and streamlining delivery of the statewide initiatives. The Assistant Director also ensures LEAs, ESCs, vendors, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and the Board are informed of progress and priorities.
Qualifications:
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, education technology, business administration, or related field

Experience
  1. Three years of experience overseeing delivery of a product or technical roadmap, including managing a backlog of feature requests and tracking work through to completion
  2. Three years of experience with education technology products, preferred
  3. Two years of experience leading or coordinating cross-functional teams
  4. Experience turning stakeholder and end-user requests into clearly defined product features
  5. Experience collaborating with engineering, security, and infrastructure teams to scope work and ensure features are delivered as expected
  6. Experience coordinating delivery across multiple vendors, prioritizing competing requests and resolving trade-offs
  7. Experience evaluating and integrating vendor products and features into a shared platform
  8. Industry experience with public, private or hybrid cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, Bedrock, and Google Cloud Platform
  9. Experience with modern data warehouses such as Snowflake or AWS Redshift, APIs, and data interoperability initiatives such as Ed-Fi
  10. Experience communicating technical product plans clearly to executive, partner, and customer audiences.

Special Knowledge and Skills
  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate stakeholder requests into clear product requirements
  2. Ability to build and maintain a product roadmap, and to keep a backlog of feature requests organized and prioritized for multiple products
  3. Ability to work directly with Region 4 engineering, security, and infrastructure teams to scope work, resolve blockers, and keep delivery on track
  4. Knowledge of the Texas K-12 education landscape and the vendor ecosystem serving it
  5. Knowledge of data governance and interoperability best practices
  6. Familiarity with the Ed-Fi data standard, preferred
  7. Ability to manage multiple concurrent delivery workstreams across competing priorities and deadlines, with strong attention to detail
  8. Ability to document and communicate complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  9. Ability to collaborate with engineers, vendors, security/infrastructure teams, and business partners to ensure features are delivered as scoped.
  10. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, preferred

Major Responsibilities:
  1. Develop and oversee the product roadmap for the Texas Education Exchange in partnership with Region 4 technical staff and vendors
  2. Translate grant requirements and stakeholder priorities from Region 4, TEA, and philanthropic partners into a prioritized roadmap
  3. Work with stakeholders to define feature requests clearly, and oversee them to delivery
  4. Participate in gap analysis sessions between existing Texas Education Exchange products, services, and capabilities and
  5. Lead a team of technical staff and contracted vendors responsible for delivering roadmap initiatives and achieving roadmap objectives and project outcomes
  6. Evaluate, onboard, and manage the vendor products that integrate with the Texas Education Exchange, ensuring alignment with the platform roadmap
  7. Coordinate the rollout and adoption of Region 4 products that utilize the Texas Education Exchange, including feature planning and release coordination
  8. Lead vendor business development, product-fit evaluation, and ongoing relationship management
  9. Drive user adoption of Exchange and vendor products across LEAs and ESCs statewide
  10. Partner with customer success and product teams to gather user feedback and translate insights into roadmap priorities
  11. Contribute to a superior end-to-end user experience across the Texas Education Exchange's product suite
  12. Recommend business cases for enhancements, projects, or solutions based on customer needs, market demand, organizational priorities, technical feasibility, cost, risk, and anticipated business impact
  13. Develop product-facing communications, feature announcements, and release messaging for technical and non-technical audiences
  14. Partner with the Texas Education Exchange Department Director in preparing meeting agendas, presentations, and product-progress documentation for senior management and the Board (Travel is required)
  15. Partner with customer success and marketing to package, position, and price product and service offerings
  16. Provide product roadmap updates, reporting, and documentation as required by applicable state grants
  17. Oversee the product roadmap for the Exchange's user support plan, cybersecurity plan, and privacy policy
  18. Ensure product and platform decisions uphold service level agreements with participating LEAs
  19. Partner with operations and customer success teams to ensure product performance meets targeted service standards
  20. Provide technical assistance, services, documentation, and reporting as specified by any applicable state grant that funds this position

Assist the Texas Exchange Department Director with the supervision and evaluation of assigned staff
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors/ Mental Demands:
Frequent use of standard office equipment; prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; repetitive hand motions (keyboarding and use of mouse); occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may work prolonged and irregular hours; work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure.
