Job description

This class performs skilled technical duties in area of specialty and on specific projects, performing under the general supervision of an Engineering Specialist.
This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Serves as a traffic signal maintenance and operations field representative by prioritizing assigned work, reporting to supervisors, responding to utility locate requests, and performing related activities
Repairs, installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and oversees the County-wide traffic signal system, including controllers, cabinets, detection systems, fiber optic, twisted-pair copper, and wireless communications systems
Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on traffic signals and associated equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation
Participates in maintaining and operating an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) within the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) domain
Assists in implementing and adjusting in-field signal timing and operational strategies
Conducts field inspections of electrical work in traffic signal controller cabinets and related appurtenances to ensure compliance with applicable plans, specifications, and standards
Inspects and verifies proper traffic signal operation, including investigating and resolving complaints regarding traffic signals
Assists with utility location services, including participation in the Sunshine One (811) program
Monitors traffic signal operations through the Traffic Management Center (TMC) / Traffic Signals Operation Center (TSOC) workstations
Maintains a preventative maintenance program, including signal inventory lists, inspection logs, timing records, and detailed maintenance documentation
Produces reports and documentation for internal use and for external agencies, including the for Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT)
Assists in the design, installation, and maintenance of traffic control devices, including traffic signals, signs, pavement markings, and related items for in-house use
Assists with construction inspection activities and coordination with contractors related to traffic signal projects
Uses computers, software, and diagnostic tools associated with traffic signal controllers and communication systems
Reads and interprets wiring diagrams, blueprints, maps, plats, improvement plans, and related technical documents
Operates applicable hand tools, power tools, aerial lifts, testing instruments, and other tools of trade in accordance with safety requirements
Follows established traffic safety procedures, work zone requirements, and aerial lift safety practices
Performs mathematical calculations related to inspections, signal timing, and project cost estimates
Communicated effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and the general public to exchange information and receive work directions
Performs other related duties as assigned, including emergency response duties during disasters or critical incidents
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and at least six months of specialized or technical training beyond high school in signals or a closely related field; or a combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to these requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid driver's license from state of residence
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics (KSAOs):
modern methods, materials, equipment and standards of traffic signalization and traffic operations.
electrical work, electronic components, wiring practices, and applicable electrical codes.

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity, and repetitive motions. Medium to Heavy Work: exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, dusts, extreme temperatures, intense noise, traffic conditions, and travel.
