Job description

Location: Chesapeake, VA - Indian Creek Correctional Center. Program oversight to include Pocahontas State Correctional Center-Residential SUD Programs, Appalachian & Cold Springs CCAP, & Grant funded SUD Social Worker positions at Keen Mountain Correctional Center, River North, & Bland Correctional Center 

Schedule: Monday-Friday, Full-time 

Pay rate: $83,000/annually

The Assistant Area Director is responsible for:

  • Providing direct supervision to Program Directors at assigned facilities including no less than monthly on-site supervision of program operations to ensure contract compliance and program fidelity  
  • Maintaining ongoing interaction with DOC officials regarding contract compliance, performance, and service delivery.  Documents recommendations or corrective actions in a monthly report/action plan to the Senior Vice President for Correctional Services. 
  • Serving as a liaison to DOC ensuring outstanding customer service to the extent that services provided meet and/or exceed specifications, DOC policies & procedures, and contract terms and conditions 
  • Conducting regularly scheduled visits to assigned sites and monitors program utilization, operations, staffing and morale.  Completing site visit reports - develops and implements quality assurance/corrective action plans as needed. 
  • Reviewing and overseeing HR specific corrective actions/employment decisions at designated sites after consultation with the VA HR Coordinator, and Area Director. 
  • Supervising implementation of new programs/services. This may require assuming Program Director roles and responsibilities when a business need exists.  
  • Conducting staff training and in-services to ensure quality services are being provided at all sites 
  • Demonstrating the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities and complete duties in the allotted time 
  • Meeting with DOC management staff at assigned sites no less than monthly to ensure customer satisfaction and timely communication between Spectrum and DOC 
  • Ensuring cost effective use of all program resources to include reviewing and signing (when indicated) expense/mileage reports, purchase orders, training, and educational reimbursements  
  • Exercising authority to act decisively in all matters (in consultation with Area Director and VA HR Coordinator when indicated) 
  • Assisting Program Directors in developing annual training & supervision plans that identify staff training needs and ensures that necessary job-related instruction is provided to staff 
  • Participates in training and educational activities to earn/maintain licensure/certification and to maintain current knowledge of evidence-based principles of offender rehabilitation 

Qualfications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services/Social Sciences/Criminal Justice required. Master’s Degree preferred in Human Services/Social Sciences/Criminal Justice field 
  • Knowledge of Evidence Based Treatment and Programs for Criminal Justice populations 
  • Experience providing oversight of multiple programs highly preferred 
  • A minimum of 3 years of management or supervision experience is required 
  • Corrections experience or experience directing services within a secure environment is desired 
  •  Virginia Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credentials must be earned within 2 years of employment as a condition of employment.  Must maintain CSAC certification in good standing while employed. 
  • Must attend annual mandatory in-service and education programs.  Must complete education required for maintenance of professional certification or licensure if applicable.
