Job Description Summary

Under direct/general supervision of the Laboratory Technologist III and/or Research Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technologist II performs complex laboratory tests and molecular laboratory procedures to support SCTR Research Nexus approved clinical trials. Responsible for performing study participant sample procurement, processing, banking, and shipping according to clinical trial documents. Performs complex procedures as required by approved protocols. Performs accurate and timely data entry and record keeping in sample database and maintain all records relating to clinical trial lab management. Responds appropriately to clinical trial study team inquiries in a timely manner. Knowledge of laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, materials, and laboratory safety practices, as well as human subjects research. Responsible for compliance with study requirements as well as all MUSC, SCTR, state and federal guidelines.

Job Description:

Under direct/general supervision of the Laboratory Technologist III and/or Research Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technologist II performs complex laboratory tests and molecular laboratory procedures to support SCTR Research Nexus approved clinical trials. Responsible for performing study participant sample procurement, processing, banking, and shipping according to clinical trial documents. Performs complex procedures as required by approved protocols. Performs accurate and timely data entry and record keeping in sample database and maintain all records relating to clinical trial lab management. Responds appropriately to clinical trial study team inquiries in a timely manner. Knowledge of laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, materials, and laboratory safety practices, as well as human subjects research. Responsible for compliance with study requirements as well as all MUSC, SCTR, state and federal guidelines.

Job Duties:

35% - Support SCTR Research Nexus Laboratory clinical research by performing sample processing, testing, and shipping according to clinical trial documents and with a high level of customer service. Demonstrate a commitment to providing quality service with a positive attitude and promotion of teamwork. Ensure all customers are treated with care, respect, and dignity.

25% - Prepare and maintain records for all procedures performed to facilitate reporting to investigators and the NIH annual report. Assist in the reviewing and reporting of data; document and report any atypical findings for molecular and specimen processing labs to clinical trial principal investigators, study teams, sponsors, and monitors. Respond to requests for information and queries pertaining to processing procedures and records in a courteous and timely manner.

15% - Adhere to laboratory safety standards and assist in maintaining overall laboratory organization and supply inventory. Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and protocol written instructions to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

10% - Perform complex mathematical calculations required for laboratory methodology, including reagent preparation and dilutions. Perform laboratory procedures, including procedures requiring aseptic technique or special handling methods. Assists in performing qualitative/ quantitative tests.

10% - Provide cross-coverage for COVID-19 biorepository including processing of specimens, documentation, and release to approved investigators.

5% - Perform other duties, as required, including training/instruction of new employees in laboratory procedures and methods.

MUSC Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent technical training in a related medical, scientific or technical discipline and two years journey-level work experience in a related field.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

Master’s degree or equivalent additional experience preferred.
