Job description

Job Title: Controller (Hands-On)

Location: Austin, TX (Round Rock)

Industry: Masonry & Structural Contracting

Reporting To: Senior Management Team

Role Overview

We are seeking a high-integrity, "boots-on-the-ground" Controller to manage the financial health of our $14M masonry firm. You will not just manage the books; you will manage the margins. This role requires a deep dive into project-level data, rigorous subcontractor compliance, and a relentless focus on Work in Progress (WIP) accuracy. You will be the primary bridge between our field foremen, our estimators, and the executive team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Subcontractor Management: Oversee the full lifecycle of sub-contracts. Ensure all insurance (COIs), workers' comp, W-9s and master service agreements are current before a single dollar is paid.
  • Lien Waiver Oversight: Implement a strict process for collecting conditional and unconditional lien waivers from lower-tier subs and suppliers to protect the company from Texas lien claims and to provide to General Contractors / Builders in order to collect Accounts Receivable.
  • Margin Analysis & WIP: Maintain the monthly WIP schedule. You must be able to identify "fading margins" early by comparing actual labor/material costs against original estimates.
  • Cash Flow & Pay Apps: Manage the AIA billing process (G702/G703). You will ensure pay applications are submitted accurately and on time to General Contractors to maintain a healthy cash cycle.
  • Job Costing Mastery: Verify that all field hours and material deliveries (brick, block, stone, sand) are coded correctly to specific jobs.
  • Financial Reporting: Perform full-cycle month-end close. WIP Schedules, Percent of Completion Revenue recognition. Provide Stakeholders with clear "KPIs" highlighting job profitability, overhead burn rates, and cash forecasts.
  • Payroll and Certified Payroll: Ensure compliance across the board between Contractors and Employees and report weekly certified payroll.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience in Construction (Masonry, Concrete, or Structural experience is a significant plus).
  • Software: Expert-level proficiency in QuickBooks Online and advanced Excel (must be able to build formulas for WIP and cash forecasting).
  • The "Texas Factor": Deep understanding of Texas Lien Laws and sales tax exemptions for capital improvement projects.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • Attributes: You must be comfortable telling a Project Manager "no" when documentation is missing and comfortable presenting "hard truths" about project performance to ownership.

Compensation: $110,000-$120,000

Additional Benefits:

  • Health/Dental/Vision (Employer-sponsored).
