About Des Moines Prep

Des Moines Prep is a new growing public charter school in downtown Des Moines committed to achieving exceptional outcomes for students: where they own and drive their learning and love their school experience. Our model combines rigorous college preparatory academics and a robust student-centered approach to instruction. We believe students learn best when they are known well, challenged deeply, and supported fully.

Des Moines Prep opened in 2025 and serves grades 8–9, expanding to serve grades 7–12 in the coming years. Our school emphasizes agency, purpose, and preparation for the future, giving students opportunities to explore college and career pathways and pursue their ambitions in a supportive, close-knit environment.

About the Role: Assistant Basketball Coach

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Assistant Basketball Coach to support the team at Des Moines Prep's new school. You'll have the unique opportunity to build team culture, establish training programs, and inspire student-athletes to grow in skill, confidence, and sportsmanship - ultimately, you will be laying the foundation for a varsity program. Ideal candidates have coaching or basketball experience, strong leadership skills, and a commitment to youth development. This part-time role involves leading practices with students after school several days per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a comprehensive training program for student-athletes
  • Organize and lead practices, workouts, and team events
  • Build a positive and inclusive team culture aligned with school values
  • Coordinate logistics for games, transportation, uniforms, and registration
  • Communicate regularly with students, families, and school staff
  • Ensure student-athletes meet eligibility requirements and academic expectations
  • Foster character development, sportsmanship, and goal setting
  • Attend required coaching trainings and meetings
Ideal Candidate Experiences
  • Required - Coaching Authorization
  • Ideal - Experience in running, basketball, or organizing athletic programs; previous coaching experience (especially basketball)

Compensation

We will be offering a semester stipend for this position of $3000.
