Job description

Job Title: Trainmaster

Department: Transportation

Reports to: NJ District Superintendent

Job Description:

The Trainmaster is responsible for assuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic in his/her assigned territory. This individual is responsible for taking a leadership role in communicating and managing safety and service programs and for supervising the placement, assignment and training of subordinates. This person also coordinates support functions with the Mechanical and Maintenance of Way Departments utilizing available resources to achieve seamless customer service and operations. The individual works with customers on a regular basis to improve service, address logistical needs, and resolve issues. This person also recommends and implements operational changes to improve the efficiency and productivity of the work force and responds to any unusual occurrence by following the established rules, procedures, and/or guidelines.

Major Job Functions:

  • Resource Management/Coordination
    • Coordinating and scheduling employees, equipment, facilities, and materials in an efficient and effective manner to accomplish work.
  • Train Assembly
    • Classifying cars and assembling outbound trains
  • Train Movement
    • Safely and efficiently moving trains within the assigned territory.
  • Customer Account Management
    • Monitoring customer accounts, resolving customer-related and foreign railroad problems, and maintaining communications with customers.
  • Managing Unusual Occurrences
    • Determining what actions to take and then acting to manage any unexpected and unusual events (e.g., derailments, incidents, etc.).
  • Safety Management
    • Administering and/or promoting Conrail's safety program, and ensuring employees' compliance with Conrail safety and operating rules and FRA regulations.
  • Supervision/Staff Development
    • Directly supervising, coaching, training, and delegating work activities to subordinates.
  • Budgeting/Capital Planning
    • Participating in the budgeting process, including developing budgets, securing capital equipment, and reviewing the status of the budget versus spending.
  • Administration
    • Completing required administrative reports and documentation, maintaining files, conducting routine communications with others, and attending training courses.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees and work as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and customer focus.
  • Thorough knowledge of car classification, dispatching, yard operations, safety and operating rules, FRA regulations, and labor collective bargaining agreements.
  • Familiarity with Engineering and Mechanical Department functions.

Physical Requirements

  • Work extended and irregular hours.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Bend, stoop, and crawl occasionally to inspect equipment.
  • Climb ladders and steps.
  • Lift up to 30 pounds.
  • Overnight travel required

As a terminal and switching service provider for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, Conrail provides safe and efficient rail service for many local rail freight customers in Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Customers located along Conrail’s lines in these shared asset areas have access to the nation’s rail network through either NS or CSX.
Although Conrail no longer handles commercial matters for customers, we continue to play a critical role in serving shippers and receivers as an agent for our owners. As a local rail service provider, it is Conrail’s job to make sure that customers’ freight shipments are safely and efficiently moved between their rail sidings and the long-distance freight trains operated by CSX and Norfolk Southern.
