POSITION:               School Bus Mechanic - Maintenance B  Essential Personnel
                                 (for school buses, trucks, cars & related equipment)
LOCATION:           Transportation

COMPENSATION:     Refer toCustodian Salary Schedule FY2026.xlsx - Google Sheets    (Maintenance B)
                                 Salary determined based on verifiable experience and relevant certifications.

NOTE:  This position is covered under the AFSCME contract.
POSITION GOAL:
Maintenance B Mechanic is responsible for maintenance repairs and preventive maintenance related to assigned skill and assistance in other maintenance operations as directed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:






















  • Demonstrated ability to perform the tasks in their specific trade, i.e. mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance of school buses, trucks, cars and related equipment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of school bus or medium/heavy truck experience (this experience should include experience in diesel engine, air brakes, steering, suspension and system diagnostics)
  • Apprenticeship or trade school preparation preferred
  • The employee must be able to lift, push and/or move up to 50 pounds.  He/she must also be able to work in extreme temperatures and/or weather conditions.  This job requires repetitive stooping, twisting and bending.
  • Must have or obtain a Class A CDL driver's license; must have or obtain Delaware School Bus Driver's license with air brakes qualification).
  • Ability to maintain detailed service records
  • Ability to read and follow basic operating instructions.
  • Acceptable Criminal Background Report and no entries on Child Abuse Registry.
  • Must qualify for and maintain a US DOT Physical, State of Delaware School Bus Driver Physical and have the physical ability to perform above duties.
  • Must submit to Drug and Alcohol Testing as required in FMCSA part 40 and 382.
  • Must supply complete set of personal tools up to one (1) inch.
  • Must have basic PC experience.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for major maintenance and preventive maintenance/troubleshooting of repairs or for all District vehicles and/or motorized equipment.
  2. Responds to maintenance requests as assigned by supervisor or designee and completion of related paperwork such as inspection reports, long-range maintenance, etc.
  3. Assists Maintenance A personnel when requested.
  4. Operates heavy tow truck and other equipment as required (including driving school bus routes in emergency situation*)
  5. Ability to work without close supervision.
  6. Willingness to respond to emergency requests at any time. Prompt response to emergency call is expected.
  7. Participates in maintenance operations other than their demonstrated skill when needed.


*Only applies to Transportation Maintenance B positions.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL:
This position in the Colonial School District is considered an Essential Personnel position.  Essential Personnel are required to be at work for emergencies during and outside of the scheduled workday, including weekends and holidays for duties including but not limited to:



  • Snow removal
  • Flooding in the building
  • Response to alarms
  • Water damage after a storm

If, for some reason, the District closes or opens on an altered schedule, regardless of the message communicated by the District, you are expected to report to work on time or at the time stated by your supervisor.
