Job description

Village Media is seeking an experienced journalist to lead a new Parliament Hill bureau of The Trillium.

The Trillium is Village Mediaโ€™s Ontario political news website. For the past three years, The Trillium has been devoted to Ontario provincial political news and has developed a reputation for impactful accountability-focused journalism at Queenโ€™s Park. Now, weโ€™re expanding to Parliament Hill to bring hard-hitting, enterprising federal political news to our readers across Ontario.

Reporting to The Trilliumโ€™s editor-in-chief, the bureau chief will be responsible for leading and assigning the Ottawa bureauโ€™s federal political news coverage and coordinating with the provincial team at Queenโ€™s Park as well as with the broader Village Media chain.

The successful candidate will be passionate about breaking news that serves Ontario voters, holds governments to account and doesnโ€™t follow the pack. The bureau chief will be team-oriented: they will file their own stories and assist the bureauโ€™s reporters with their work.

The Kind of People We're Looking For

Village Media is beyond a traditional media company. Weโ€™re a community impact organization. Our purpose is to help communities become stronger by keeping people informed, connected, and engaged.

That means we look for people who genuinely care about the places they serve. We need teammates who are curious, collaborative, adaptable, and energized by solving problems. Youโ€™ll fit right in if you take initiative, embrace change, and are always willing to step outside your job description to help the team or the community succeed.

Weโ€™re building something ambitious in the digital media space, so we value:

  • Humility over ego
  • Optimism over cynicism
  • Ownership over \u201Cthatโ€™s not my job\u201D

We move quickly, support one another, and believe meaningful work comes from people who care deeply about both their colleagues and their neighbours. If you're excited by the opportunity to make a real difference where people live, you'll thrive here.

At Village Media, aptitude matters. Attitude matters more.

This role will be primarily in-office and on Parliament Hill, with flexibility for some remote work when the House rises.

Responsibilities
  • Leading a team of journalists to report federal political news stories for readers of Village Mediaโ€™s network of local news websites across Ontario, and for political insiders who subscribe to The Trillium
  • Working with The Trillium and Village Media to establish the Ottawa bureau and build the reporting team
  • Training and mentoring reporters on how to develop sources and access documents to break federal political news stories
  • Participating in the peer-editing of the bureauโ€™s stories for accuracy, readability and Canadian Press style
  • Being Village Mediaโ€™s ambassador in Ottawa
Qualifications
  • Seven-to-10 years in journalism and experience covering federal politics
  • Experience in newsroom leadership
  • A proven ability to break enterprising accountability-focused news stories
  • The ability to work some nights and weekends when required
  • Reside in the National Capital Region or within commuting distance

Salary Range: $100,000 - $150,000 per year
