Job description

Organization Overview: The Goddard Riverside Community Center (Goddard Riverside) is a well-establishedย Manhattan community-based agency that supports services to approximately 30,000 New Yorkers. We areย two of New York Cityโ€™s leading human services organizations meeting the needs of children, youth andย families, homeless individuals, and older adults throughout Manhattan and New York City. We work every dayย for a fair and just society where all people have the opportunity to make choices that lead to better lives forย themselves and their families.


Program Description: Beacon Community Centers are in public schools throughout New York City and serveย youth from kindergarten through age 21 and adults ages 22 and older, including Older Adults. Beacons operateย year-round on non-school hours, weekdays, evenings, weekends and in the summer as a resource to the entireย community by offering integrated programming tailored to local needs. During the summer, Beaconsย collaborate with the New York City Public Schools for the Summer Rising initiative.

Position Summary: Group Leaders are assigned to lead and work with a group of co-ed children (grades K-8)ย 
and staff. Groups are divided into grade groups (kindergarten through eighth grade), for reading enrichment,ย project-based learning, group games, social-emotional competencies, STEM, Kidz Lit, Career Awareness,ย Nutrition, Coding, Study Skills, Cooking, Dance, Storytelling, Drama, Chorus and field trips. Group Leaders workย in unison with other Group Leaders and activity specialists. Together and through Group Work practice, ourย staff works to provide a positive and creative environment for the social and intellectual development of allย participants.

Schedule:ย 2:00pm to 6:00pm; 12:30-6:00 pm; Varied Schedule

Hourly Rate: $21.00/hr

Roles, Responsibilities and Essential Duties

  • Fostering a learning environment that stimulates childrenโ€™s creative growth and development.
  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership โ€“ be a team member of a group of staff and a group of 15-20 youth in grades K-8; and High School.
  • Maintain sound supervision and ensure the safety of program participants.
  • Supervise Youth Workers and other supportive staff.
  • Deliver recreational and cultural programs to develop community and explore the program theme, thatย include art, literacy, current events, games, and varied projects.
  • Supervise youth and participate in all activities.
  • Building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor,ย communication, behavior, and the organizationโ€™s mission, philosophy, and goals.
  • Working with children on developmental and emotional issues
  • Encourage program participation and development of social skills.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans, calendars, and schedules.
  • Teach and supervise organized games and assist the activity specialist, escort groups to and fromย activity areas and field trips and carry out other tasks as directed by Program Coordinator.
  • After School Group Leader Beacon Program
  • Fulfill administrative requirements (schedules, community events, attendance records, incident reportsย and progress reports).
  • Enforce program rules, identify, and respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out correctiveย action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems (includingย those with staff).
  • Communicate with families about participantsโ€™ experiences and report concerns to the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and Program Aide.
  • Know and enforce ALL emergency procedures and follow safety guidelines associated with all programย areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your childrenโ€™s safety and whereaboutsย at all times.
  • Attend staff training, weekly meetings, professional development workshops, and supervisionย meetings.
  • Other duties as required and assigned by Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and Viceย 
  • President for Youth Servies.

Qualifications & Educational Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working with youth under 13 years of age in groups.
  • At least one year in a supervisory role.
  • High School Diploma/GED; Associate or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Must have a sense of humor and a passion for youth development.
  • Must be able to pass background checks including Fingerprint Screening.
  • CPR/First Aid Certification is a plus.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Create and able to implement plans for groups.
  • Must be able to follow the curriculum.
  • Write necessary group reports, evaluations, and lesson plans for activities and youth.
  • Effectively supervise children at all times.
  • Effectively supervise Youth Workers and additional staff, including written evaluations.
  • Must be reliable, responsible, and punctual!
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Word & Excel.
  • Access to the internet.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, and walking.
  • Able to climb the stairs.
  • Must be able to carry up to 20 lbs.
