Job description

About The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global environmental non‑profit organization that was founded in 1951 in the United States. It is one of the largest and most influential environmental organizations in the world, with operations in 79 countries and territories, 37 of them through direct actions and 42 through partnerships. TNC’s mission is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends, aiming to create innovative, on‑the‑ground solutions to our world’s toughest environmental challenges. With a team of over 400 scientists and more than 1 million dedicated members, TNC works on a variety of conservation issues including climate change, sustainable agriculture, clean water, and protection of biodiversity. The organization is rooted in its mission and guided by values that respect all people, communities, and cultures.

About this Role

The Carbon Finance Associate will sit in The Nature Conservancy’s Impact Finance and Markets Division, working within the Global Carbon Markets team to lead project finance activities for Natural Climate Solutions (NCS). This position offers a temporary two‑year term with the potential for extension based on performance and funding availability. The associate will collaborate with various stakeholders, including local business units and external actors, to enhance the quality of TNC’s NCS carbon project portfolio. Key areas of focus include supporting financial modeling, equitable benefit sharing arrangements, and coordinating impact investment opportunities. The role involves building financial models, carrying out viability assessments for NCS projects, and developing strategic frameworks for community compensation mechanisms, aligned with the organization’s mission to drive sustainable conservation initiatives globally.

Responsibilities
  • Develop financial models and financial viability assessments for NCS carbon projects.
  • Support the Global Carbon Markets technical team with feasibility studies and project design documentation.
  • Develop FP&A tools for the Carbon Markets Team, TNC business units, and project partners.
  • Support the development of equitable benefit sharing arrangements at the project level.
  • Design fair and inclusive profit‑sharing mechanisms, community compensation, and incentive payment schemes.
  • Stay updated on trends in carbon markets, including carbon credit prices and emerging investment opportunities.
  • Travel and work flexible hours as needed.
  • Act independently within broad program goals to prioritize tasks and solve problems.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field and 4 years’ related experience.
  • Experience in project finance, with advanced financial modeling skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, research, and analysis skills.
  • Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with carbon market standards and experience working on NCS carbon project development is appreciated.
  • Multi‑lingual skills and/or multi‑cultural experience.
Benefits
  • Competitive and comprehensive benefits package including health care benefits.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • 401(k) plan with an 8% employer match.
  • Parental leave.
  • Accrued paid time off.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage.
  • Employee assistance program.
  • Flexible work environment supporting the health and well‑being of employees.
