Job Description

Classical Preparatory School seeks a strategic, scholar-centered Athletic Director to lead and strengthen its K-12 athletic program. The Athletic Director is responsible for building a program that reflects both competitive excellence and the development of scholar-athletes in character, discipline, and perseverance.
This role establishes clear systems, expectations, and accountability across all aspects of athletics. The Athletic Director ensures that athletic programming is proactively planned, well-organized, and consistently executed in alignment with the school's mission and long-term priorities.
This is a leadership position that requires sound judgment, strong organizational capacity, and the ability to lead both people and systems effectively.
Overview
  • Starting Salary for Certified Teachers: $53,000
  • Additional Compensation: Eligible for referendum supplement based on verified years of experience as a certified teacher.

Position Details
  • Position: Full-time, exempt
  • Work Schedule: Typically 7:00 AM-3:30 PM, 234 days per year. Start and end times may vary during active seasons and may include professional development days, evenings, weekends, and summer hours as needed
  • Benefits: New full-time employees are eligible for insurance coverage beginning the first of the month following 60 days of employment, a 3% match of employee retirement contributions with a two-year vesting period, and 12 days of PTO
  • Reports to Upper School Dean and COO

The Athletic Director is expected to model professionalism, urgency, and alignment with the mission of Classical Preparatory School. In this role, the Athletic Director will:
  • Serve as a collaborative thought partner with the Head of School, COO, Upper School Dean, and Leadership Team
  • Maintain clear, professional, and proactive communication with administration, coaches, staff, scholars, and families
  • Lead with professionalism and sound judgment, addressing challenges directly and constructively
  • Provide direction, support, and accountability to coaching staff
  • Represent the athletic program through active presence at home games and key events
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to strengthen program leadership

Specific tasks required of this role include, but are not limited to the following:
Strategic Leadership and Program Vision
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive vision for athletics aligned with the mission of Classical Preparatory School
  • Establish clear standards for sportsmanship, discipline, and competitive integrity
  • Build a culture of accountability, professionalism, and excellence
  • Lead annual athletic planning, including full-year calendar development and program goals
  • Ensure athletic programming supports scholar development in mind, body, and character

Program Planning & Accountability
  • Ensure each season is fully planned prior to launch by designing and maintaining systems that ensure proactive planning and execution of all athletic seasons
  • Establish and enforce timelines for season (launch, hiring, tryouts, scheduling, and communication)
  • Ensure no aspect of the program operates reactively or without clear ownership
  • Hold coaches and staff accountable to defined expectations and performance standards
  • Lead regular athletic department meetings (including pre-season coach and parent meetings)) to maintain alignment and communication

Program Oversight & Operations
  • Oversee all aspects of athletic operations, ensuring systems are clearly defined, documented, and consistently executed across scheduling, facilities, transportation, and game management
  • Ensure all seasons are fully planned and launched in advance (practices, games, officials, logistics)
  • Provide oversight and accountability for concession operations, ticketing, and game-day staffing
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe athletic facilities
  • Ensure the athletic handbook and athletics section of the school website are accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with current policies, schedules, and program expectations

Staffing & Coach Management
  • Recruit, screen, hire, and onboard qualified coaches
  • Provide ongoing mentorship, supervision, and evaluation of coaching staff, including conducting preseason, mid-season, and post-season evaluations
  • Establish clear expectations for communication, professionalism, program management, and alignment with school values
  • Ensure all coach stipends are submitted for approval prior to each season, and that all coaches review and sign stipend agreements and coaching contracts before the start of the season

Scholar-Athlete Development
  • Ensure academic accountability and adherence to eligibility standards
  • Collaborate with school leadership on discipline and eligibility matters
  • Support scholar-athlete development through discipline, teamwork, leadership, and personal growth

Compliance & Governance
  • Ensure full compliance with FHSAA, TCAL, and other regulatory bodies
  • Oversee athlete eligibility system (academics, forms, fees, physicas/EKGs)
  • Maintain accurate records and reporting systems
  • Approve final team rosters prior to being released

Budget & Financial Oversight
  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer to develop and manage the athletic budget
  • Monitor revenue and expenses on a monthly basis
  • Track all financial components including:
    • Revenue: athletic fees, concessions, ticket sales, fundraising and sponsorships
    • Expenditures by sport: equipment, field rentals, league fees, uniforms, referees, other needs
    • Stipends
  • Ensure financial decisions align with budget projections
  • Communicate any necessary adjustments promptly to leadership
  • Plan and implement fundraising activities to meet financial goals

Scheduling, External Relations, and Communication
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for athletic communication
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with families, staff, opposing schools, athletic directors, and officials
  • Collaborate with coaches to develop and finalize game schedules, ensuring all contests are confirmed and aligned with league and school requirements
  • Address parent concerns professionally and effectively
  • Promote school spirit and engagement through athletic events
  • Collaborate with communications and advancement to highlight athletic programs

Program Development
  • Develop and implement lower school clinics, camps, and feeder programs
  • Promote and expand participation opportunities across grade levels
  • Support scholar-athlete development, including college pathways

Events & Culture
  • Oversee the planning and execution of key athletic events, including Senior Nights, pep rallies, and awards ceremonies
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Assistant and coaches to ensure events are well-organized, communicated in advance, and executed to school standards
  • Ensure senior recognition is planned in advance, including coordination of:
    • family communication
    • announcements
    • signage and banners
    • gifts and recognition elements
  • Promote a culture of school spirit, sportsmanship, and community engagement through athletic events
  • Coordinate photos and creation of senior banners each season

  • Hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree and have three to five years of successful coaching and/or teaching experience
