Job description

CES is seeking an experienced Pipelayer to join our underground utility crew on civil site construction projects. The Pipelayer is responsible for the safe and accurate installation of storm drain, sanitary sewer, and water main pipe systems. This role requires working closely with the crew foreman and equipment operators to ensure all work meets plan specifications, grade tolerances, and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Install storm drainage, sanitary sewer, and water main pipe (RCP, PVC, DIP, HDPE, etc.) to specified line and grade
  • Read and interpret civil plans, profiles, and grade stakes to ensure accurate pipe placement
  • Set and check pipe grade using laser levels, string lines, or GPS/machine control systems
  • Prepare trench bedding and backfill in accordance with specifications
  • Connect pipe joints, fittings, manholes, catch basins, and other structures
  • Install cleanouts, tie-ins, and service connections as required
  • Coordinate with excavator/backhoe operators for trench excavation and backfill sequencing
  • Identify and avoid utility conflicts; work safely around existing underground utilities
  • Perform trench shoring/box placement and follow all trench safety protocols
  • Conduct visual inspections of pipe and joints for defects prior to installation
  • Assist with pipe testing (mandrel, air, or water testing) as directed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site
  • Communicate effectively with foreman, operators, and laborers throughout the workday
  • Perform general laborer duties as needed (shoveling, tamping, material handling)

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2+ years of experience laying pipe on civil construction sites
  • Working knowledge of storm, sanitary, and water utility installation practices
  • Ability to read civil/utility plans and grade stakes
  • Understanding of trench safety requirements (OSHA competent person awareness a plus)
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs repeatedly and perform physically demanding labor
  • Reliable transportation to job sites
  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Experience with laser grade and/or GPS machine control systems
  • CDL license
  • Trench safety / competent person training
  • Experience installing manholes, catch basins, and lift stations

This position involves outdoor work at active construction sites, including exposure to heat, cold, and varying weather conditions. Work requires standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting for extended periods, and working in and around open trenches and heavy equipment.

Pay is based on experience.
