Responsibilities
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a candidate for a Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) Research Operations Lead (facility focus). The Research Operations Lead (facility focus) provides technical, safety, facility and operational support for CAES research, laboratories, equipment and research operations to support the CAES Chief Operations Officer (COO) for successful execution of the CAES mission, vision, goals and objectives on a day-to-day basis. CAES is a consortium of INL, Boise State University (BSU), Idaho State University (ISU), University of Idaho (UI) and University of Wyoming (UW), and is a public/private research center that provides innovative research, promotes energy education to enhance technical capabilities and advance energy science, and industry assistance to support economic growth. The CAES facility is a 55,000 sq. ft. LEED Gold facility with eight laboratories, including radiological and chemical labs.
The focus of this position is on enabling and supporting CAES research and collaboration objectives to ensure excellence in technical and safety outcomes. In addition to the COO, the Research Operations Lead-facility focus works closely with:

-CAES Associate Directors - BSU, ISU, UI, UW
-CAES Chief Safety Officer
-CAES Facility Manager-ISU
Under the direction of the CAES COO and in collaboration with the CAES CSO the Research Operations Lead roles and responsibilities include: 1) act as a liaison between CAES researchers to the Idaho State University (ISU) Facility Manager by initiating and overseeing proposed facility modifications and equipment modifications via ISU processes, 2) identify, track and oversee research operations/facility opportunities for improvement, 3) develop and coordinate training improvements and safety measures for CAES research community, 4) lead efforts to develop, identify and track key CAES safety performance indicators/metrics, 5) function as a CAES project plan point of contact for INL and university researchers performing R&D at CAES, 6) advance the development of innovative processes, systems and tools necessary to conduct high quality work for CAES entities, 7) report progress and issues to CAES COO.
The Research Operations Lead works on complex issues with diverse scope. Reporting to the CAES COO the Research Operations Lead may contribute a portion of their time to small projects that require the successful candidate to: 1) deliver solutions to unusually complex problems requiring a high degree of ingenuity and innovation, 2) understand and convey complex research ideas to an identified target audience, 3) accurately provide solutions to collect, prepare, and analyze relevant data from multiple sources, 4) communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, 5) utilize sound judgment to analyze technical data to plan, create and develop a variety of document types, 6) perform these efforts independently and in team environments to ensure actions contribute to achieving CAES program/project objectives and final products meet management's expectations and needs. This position requires the individual is a team player and accurately communicates information and details to ISU Facility Manager, CSO, COO, CAES Associate Directors, and CAES Director to ensure technical, safety and facility accountability for the CAES organization.
BS degree in a technical discipline (i.e. engineering, chemistry, industrial hygiene or industrial safety) plus 5 years relevant experience or an advanced degree in a technical discipline (i.e. engineering, chemistry, industrial hygiene or industrial safety) plus 3 years relevant experience.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience, including experience in one of the following areas: planning and execution of laboratory research, research laboratory/facility operations, experience with non-radiological and/or radiological facilities, and engineering expertise in an R&D setting.
The results oriented candidate should have experience in working with a diverse research community, tracking key performance indicators, developing presentations and reports, willingness and ability to collaborate effectively in a strong team environment, and the ability to make effective decisions in complex situations.
Anyone of the following credentials are highly desirable but not required 1) a M.S or B.S. in a science based technical or engineering discipline, 2) certified industrial hygienist, 3) certified safety professional, 4) certified health physicist.
It is preferred that the candidate have experience in one of the following: a DOE-supported research and development entity, experience in a university setting or an understanding of operating State facilities.
