Specific Job Information:

These regional coordinator positions will require some overnight travel and weekend work. Must possess a number of skills that are both technical and interpersonal. Good communication and leadership skills are needed for interacting effectively with staff, sportsmen, landowners and other stakeholders regarding issues related to CWD. The incumbent will need to be effective at time management and at times will be required to work in inclement weather, rough terrain, and around offensive sights and odors. Very long workdays may sometimes be required.

Job Duties:

This position is responsible for all CWD sampling operations in each Region as well as coordinating all field logistics and surveillance efforts to ensure a successful CWD sampling season. This position serves as the CWD Program's Liaison to FWP staff and public in their Region. This position will act as the lead technician for up to 6 field technicians who will begin their positions in each Region prior to the start of the general hunting season. This position will be responsible for teaching their regions CWD technicians how to collect and package CWD samples and collect the required data for each sample. This position requires the organization of their technicians work schedules, collecting deer heads for training, obtaining permission for sampling location sites, and coordinating with meat processors and taxidermists for sample collection. This position will also organize the distribution of CWD-related educational materials to various groups/locations and lead educational outreach with hunters and members of the public. In addition, this position will serve as the primary CWD sample collector for their assigned region during the archery season.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Behaviors):

Previous experience working as a CWD Program field technician is required.  Direct knowledge and experience with all aspects of the CWD Program's sample collection, data entry, and shipping protocols is required. Competent knowledge of CWD, understanding of the agency's CWD management plan, and the ability to effectively communicate it to a diverse audience is required. Knowledge of biology, disease processes (especially CWD), animal ecology, anatomy and population dynamics are required.  Basic map reading skills and familiarity with map coordinate systems and GPS units are required.   Good organizational and time management skills are required as well as the ability to accurately collect and record data following all protocols.  Knowledge of computer applications such as word processing and Microsoft Excel are required.  Incumbent must be able to operate a four-wheel drive vehicle safely.  Demonstrated previous experience in a crew lead or lead worker capacity is preferred.  The ability to work without supervision in potentially hazardous conditions is expected.  Incumbent must demonstrate an ability to work with other professional biologists, field technicians and the public.  Communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through combination of education and experience equivalent to a minimum of two years of college work towards a bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, fish and wildlife management, animal ecology, biology, or a closely related field and related work experience. Supervisory experience is preferred. Combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

May be required to acquire and maintain certification in the capture and handling of wildlife.
