A Brief Overview

A Research Tech position is available in the laboratory of Ethan M. Goldberg, M.D., Ph.D., in the Division of Neurology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

The lab studies mechanisms of epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders using a range of techniques, including human and mouse genetics, neurons generated from induced pluripotent stem cells from human patients, electrophysiology, advanced microscopy, and animal behavior.

The applicant will provide technical support and work with the Principle Investigator and research team. Activities will include: animal (mouse) husbandry (breeding, handling, surgical procedures, and genotyping); immunohistochemistry, mouse behavioral training, molecular biology and biochemistry, lab managerial and maintenance duties, and supervision/training of junior staff. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, self-driven, and committed to learning and working as part of a team.

Specific prior experience with animal handling and animal surgeries such as stereotaxic injection, and histology/immunohistochemistry, is considered a plus. Animal handling and or surgeries is needed. The candidate will have excellent data recording, organizational, and communication skills, and the ability to multi-task. The highly motivated candidate will have the opportunity to perform independent experiments, interpret the results, and participate in the generation of manuscripts
What you will do

  • Learn and then independently performs research procedures
  • Maintain appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Plan and modify research protocols and procedures
  • Mouse colony maintenance and genotyping
  • Cell culture
  • Prepares laboratory reagents, monitors and maintains laboratory inventory
  • Supervises, trains and mentors undergraduate students and new staff members
  • Determines work assignments, schedules and laboratory priorities

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Required
  • At least five (5) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Preferred

  • Advanced knowledge in the use of a wide variety of lab techniques, research equipment and research related software
