A Brief Overview
Will, under the direction/guidance of a mentor (principal investigator), assume responsibility for a specific, on-going research project in Pediatric Rehabilitation. The postdoc experience will serve to extend, refine and enhance skills necessary for professional and career development in Pediatric Rehabilitation research, and will enable the individual to broaden his/her scientific background by acquiring new research capabilities. It is expected that this individual will conduct independent scholarly research, and will contribute directly to the overall research goals of the project and the Pediatric Rehabilitation research group. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to participate in project planning, recording and interpretation/evaluation of data, and communication of results. The postdoctoral fellow will also be expected to acquire technical, lab management, and manuscript/grant writing skills; and participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentations at national meetings and presentations to patient advocacy groups. The postdoctoral fellow also may be required to supervise junior lab members, develop new methods and protocols for research, and assist with the development of other research projects in the lab. The postdoctoral fellow may be required to render physical therapy services to an assigned caseload of children in clinical care areas related to research activity and/or in other areas based on staffing and clinical volumes.

About the Laborator

We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher who is also licensed as a physical therapist to make an academic contribution to the Mitochondrial Myopathy Clinical Research program and the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Current areas of focus include validation of objective outcome measures in Mitochondrial Myopathy for natural history studies and clinical trials and development and validation of novel minimally invasive methods to measure mitochondrial function in human subjects in our translational research efforts.

This role would provide opportunity to:

· Work with a large clinical cohort with Mitochondrial disease

· Learn to administer the MM-COAST and MM-Function measures of Mitochondrial disease

· Investigate new approaches to measuring Mitochondrial patient's multi-dimensional symptoms

· Conduct scholarly research involving literature search and preparation of abstracts, posters, grants and manuscripts

· Develop new methods and protocols of assessment

· Participate in project planning, recording, and evaluation of data

· Conduct statistical analyses in conjunction with an assigned biostatistician

· Participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentation at meetings

· Supervise junior lab members

· Multidisciplinary team coordination

This is a full-time, NIH-funded, hybrid position working under the direct supervision of Jean Flickinger (lead Mitochondrial PT) and Zuela Zolkipli-Cunningham, MD along with academic oversight provided by Laura Prosser, PT, PhD and other PT, PhDs at CHOP/Penn. The position requires a physical therapy license in the state of Pennsylvania, as it is a clinician-scientist role including both clinical (~20%) and research effort. The position is available immediately.

Education Qualifications

• Doctorate Physical Therapy (DPT) Required
• Doctorate Enrollment in a PhD Program like Physical Therapy or similar field of study. Preferred

Experience Qualifications

• At least two (2) years Minimum of 2 years of experience practicing as a physical therapist Preferred

Skills and Abilities

• Physical therapy examination, evaluation, and treatment of children with impairments of body functions and structure, limitations in activities, and participation restrictions (Required proficiency)
• Administer standard clinical tests of movement, child development, and motor function (Preferred proficiency)
• Biomechanical assessment of movement which may include expertise in accelerometry, electromyography, kinematics, kinetics and related signal processing (Preferred proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

• Physical Therapy License (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required and
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross) required. - upon hire - Required
