Branch County Clerk

Current Term: Appointment to last through December 31, 2028.

Position Summary

The Branch County Clerk is an elected constitutional officer responsible for administering a broad range of statutory duties that are essential to the operation of county government and the judicial system. This position serves as a key leader within the county, working collaboratively with elected officials, county departments, local municipalities, state agencies, and the public to ensure efficient, transparent, and lawful government operations.

Primary Responsibilities

Pursuant to Michigan law, the Branch County Clerk serves in several official capacities, including:

  • Clerk of the Circuit Court
  • Chief Election Official for Branch County
  • County Registrar
  • Clerk of the Jury Board
  • Clerk to the County Board of Canvassers
  • Clerk to the Branch County Board of Commissioners

Additional statutory responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and preserving official county records.
  • Processing and approving applications related to Concealed Pistol Licenses as required by law.
  • Approving the issuance of local assumed business name certificates.
  • Serving as a member of the County Election Commission.
  • Serving as a member of the County Plat Board.
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable state laws governing elections, court administration, public records, and county government.

Working Relationships

The County Clerk works closely with:

  • Circuit Court judges and court personnel
  • County elected officials and department heads
  • The Branch County Board of Commissioners
  • City and township clerks
  • State agencies, including the Michigan Department of State
  • Members of the public

Some travel throughout the county and to state meetings or training sessions may be required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Michigan Circuit Court procedures and court administration.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain Michigan election certification.
  • A thorough understanding of Michigan election law.
  • Knowledge of Michigan concealed pistol licensing laws and related statutory requirements.
  • Experience preparing accurate meeting minutes.
  • Familiarity with Robert's Rules of Order and the Michigan Open Meetings Act.
  • Budget preparation and fiscal management experience.
  • Strong supervisory, leadership, and personnel management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • The ability to manage multiple statutory responsibilities while maintaining accuracy, professionalism, and public confidence.
