Description
St. Bonaventure University is seeking an experienced accounting professional to support tax compliance, financial reporting, audits, and other key Business Office functions.
The Accounting and Tax Compliance Manager works closely with the Controller and Assistant Controller and is responsible for several important areas, including tax filings, fixed assets, debt accounting, year-end close, and external reporting. This position also supervises the Budget Analyst and works with departments across the University to promote accurate and timely financial processes.
The successful candidate will have strong accounting skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines. Experience in higher education or a nonprofit organization is preferred.
Examples of Duties
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance and External Reporting
  • Coordinate the preparation of the University's annual Form 990 and related schedules.
  • Prepare or support foreign tax reporting, including Forms 1042, 1042-T, and 1042-S.
  • Prepare and file monthly sales tax reports.
  • Assist with NCAA audits and annual EADA reporting.
  • Support the University's credit-rating review and other external financial requests.
  • Maintain organized documentation for tax, audit, and regulatory reporting.

Accounting and Financial Reporting
  • Assist with interim and annual financial statements.
  • Prepare schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for the annual audit.
  • Manage fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, and disposals.
  • Maintain debt schedules and support related financial statement disclosures.
  • Assist with year-end closing activities.
  • Research and resolve accounting issues in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and University policies.
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and financial reporting.

Supervision and Department Support
  • Supervise and support the Budget Analyst.
  • Serve as a resource to Business Office staff and University departments.
  • Promote accurate, consistent, and timely financial practices.
  • Support cross-training and continuity within the Business Office.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Maintain the confidentiality and integrity of financial and institutional information.
  • Follow University policies and procedures.
  • Participate in professional development related to accounting, tax compliance, nonprofit reporting, and higher education finance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Education:
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Experience with federal and state reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Public Accountant license or CPA candidate strongly preferred.
  • Experience in higher education, nonprofit accounting, public accounting, or a complex fund-accounting environment.
  • Experience with Form 990, sales tax, 1042/1042-S reporting, fixed assets, debt accounting, audit schedules, or external financial reporting.
  • Experience supervising staff.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems used in higher education or nonprofit finance.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship.
Years of Experience:
At least five years' experience in accounting, preferably non-profit. Knowledgeable of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and federal and state reporting and compliance.
Certification and/or Licensure:
Certified Public Accountant license or CPA candidate strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong technical accounting, analytical, and reconciliation skills.
  • Ability to interpret financial information, identify issues, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to organize work, manage competing deadlines, and shift quickly among multiple priorities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to evaluate and process forms, verify data for accuracy and completeness, and ensure compliance with established procedures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, campus departments, auditors, external partners, and University leadership.
  • Professionalism, discretion, and commitment to confidentiality.
  • Willingness to accept supervision, assignments, change, and feedback.

Working Conditions / Physical requirements:
Standard office environment. Regular use of a computer and exposure to video display screens. The position requires the ability to sit for extended periods, communicate effectively, and use standard office equipment. Occasional extended hours may be required during audit, tax, budget, or year-end close periods.
