The BNSF Railway Engineering Department is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining the infrastructure of our extensive rail network. This crucial role involves applying advanced engineering principles to address complex challenges, ensuring the safety and efficiency of our operations. This is a full-time position based in Kansas City, KS, and is subject to on-call responsibilities for emergency situations, as well as rotating shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays
Travel is required approximately 60-90%
This position reports to Manager of Engineering
Key responsibilities may include:
Duties and Responsibilities for all Project Engineers Include:
Manage the implementation of construction projects including planning, permitting, project administration, construction management, inspection and project performance, as required.
Implement and manage construction safety processes.
Effectively evaluate and control change orders associated with projects.
Support cash flow forecast process.
Support the preparation of detailed estimates for the Capital Expenditure Program.
Projects generally will be fast paced and dynamic.
Projects and responsibilities will vary widely, driven by BNSF's needs.
Duties and Responsibilities for Some Project Engineers (Depending on a Construction or Public Projects role) May Include:
Manage the development of engineering plans, estimates and schedules for main line and other track projects such as line changes, double track, yard modifications and other railway facilities projects, with the primary focus being stabilization issues.
Furnish engineering support for design and maintenance of railroad structures including bridges, tunnels and culverts.
Assist working with public agencies on interdependent projects.
Coordinate internal Signal, Track, Telecommunications and Structures design and construction activities to progress the overall project.
Daily work is conducted in an indoor/outdoor safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be experienced in working with contractors for construction projects relating to track, facilities and new construction.
  • Planning and engineering design capability essential.
  • Must have thorough understanding of track and general civil engineering, including geotechnical engineering, and should also be knowledgeable of track maintenance and train operations.
  • Communication skills must be exemplary to allow frequent interfacing with BNSF Railway and various public agencies.
  • Must have strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team member, coordinating the efforts of multiple project stakeholders.
  • A working understanding of permitting processes is desirable.
  • Engineering or Construction Management degree highly desired.
  • Must be knowledgeable with, or be able to quickly learn, BNSF's engineering standards and policies.
