Job description

Job Summary and Qualifications

The Hospital Utility Housekeeper performs environmental service duties that promote a safe, clean, sanitary and aesthetically pleasing environment that contributes to the healing process. Routinely demonstrates both knowledge and skill in the safe use of chemicals, equipment, cleaning techniques and infection control methods necessary to maintain the department’s established quality standards. Demonstrates competence in the safe handling, removal and internal transport of solid, recycling, medical waste, and hazardous drug waste. Is considerate, courteous and polite to all who enter the facility, demonstrating the key values and concern and providing assistance as required. Role requires 8-Hours Hazardous Waste Management - Awareness Training (40CFR 265.16) and DOT manifest training as a haz- mat employee.

What you will do in this role:

  • Routinely demonstrates both knowledge and skill in the safe use of chemicals, equipment, cleaning techniques and infection control methods necessary to maintain the department’s established quality standards
  • Presents a clean environment by emptying internal transporting and sanitizing waste containers
  • Cleans interiors by washing windows, walls, ceilings, vents and light fixtures
  • Presents a clean environment by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors
  • Uses appropriate cleaning techniques, supplies, and safety precautions in cleaning assigned area and equipment
  • Demonstrates competence in the safe handling and removal of medical waste, and pharmaceutical (RX) drug waste
  • Using a checklist schedule- Ensures that waste in soiled utility rooms and other areas are pick-up on a scheduled basis-– in and timely manner and follows up as directed by supervisor to other areas requesting waste pick-ups
  • Helps ensure that empty containers are available for disposal; regulated medical waste, hazardous drug waste- black RX bins are in the appropriate areas, and help ensure that 2 containers are clean, appropriately lined- with correct color or translucent liners, and those containers and are appropriately labeled
  • Ensures that liners for full containers are tied closed, and that lids for containers are in place
  • Ensures that areas where waste is stored- soiled utility rooms and other areas are secured locked or accessed by staff badge readers, and that waste is stored properly in these areas segregated from clean materials. Helps ensure that soiled utility areas – isle space is maintained – to access waste materials
  •  Responsible for reporting patient care equipment- IV poles, pumps, broken equipment, and other materials that are blocking waste containers or impede pick-ups to EVS supervisor
  • Oversees disposal process by transporting solid waste from carts to soiled utility areas
 What qualifications you will need:
  • High School Graduate\Equivalent preferred
  • 1 + years of experience in healthcare preferred
