Job Overview

The Journeyman Carpenter is responsible for performing advanced carpentry work throughout every phase of custom residential construction, from site preparation and foundation work through final punch list completion. This role requires a high level of craftsmanship, technical knowledge, and leadership while supporting Blue Ribbon Builders' standards for safety, quality, productivity, and professionalism.

The Journeyman Carpenter leads by example in the field, mentors Apprentice Carpenters and Carpenter Trainees, coordinates daily work with the Foreman and Superintendent, and ensures assigned scopes of work are completed efficiently, safely, and to Blue Ribbon Builders' quality standards.

Outcomes

  • Complete assigned scopes of work safely, accurately, and in accordance with project schedules and Blue Ribbon Builders quality standards.
  • Lead Apprentice Carpenters and Carpenter Trainees by providing daily instruction, coaching, and mentorship while promoting continuous skill development.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and hazard-free jobsites by ensuring proper housekeeping, material storage, equipment maintenance, and adherence to BRB safety protocols.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all phases of high-end residential construction including framing, finish carpentry, concrete, structural steel, timber and log work, cabinetry, drywall, thermal and moisture protection systems, windows and doors, and architectural details.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, schedules, and details to accurately complete layout and construction tasks.
  • Plan work efficiently by assisting with material lists, cut lists, equipment utilization, crew organization, and daily productivity planning.
  • Protect completed work and building materials while ensuring manufacturer installation requirements and BRB installation standards are consistently followed.
  • Recognize, communicate, and help resolve safety hazards, quality concerns, and productivity challenges before they impact project progress.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and respect for clients, subcontractors, and fellow employees.
  • Support Foremen and Superintendents in achieving project goals related to safety, quality, schedule, and productivity.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

  • Journeyman-level proficiency in all phases of custom residential construction from foundation through finish.
  • Advanced framing, roof systems, stair construction, log and timber work, finish carpentry, cabinetry, windows and doors.
  • Experience with concrete, structural and architectural steel installation, drywall, thermal and moisture barriers, and specialty finishes.
  • Ability to perform advanced layout and complete work with precision and efficiency.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, schedules, elevations, and construction details.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies and communicate questions before construction begins.
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop Apprentice Carpenters and Carpenter Trainees.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to motivate crews and foster teamwork.
  • Skilled in the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, construction equipment, forklifts, lifts, and related jobsite equipment.
  • Ability to maintain tools and equipment in safe operating condition.

Job Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Construction-related college education preferred but not required.
  • Experience: Minimum five (5) years of full-time carpentry construction experience required, including at least two (2) years of high-end custom residential construction preferred.
  • Licenses: Valid driver's license required.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to safely lift and move construction materials using proper lifting techniques and request assistance when necessary.
  • Safety Requirements: Consistent use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, and other required safety equipment.
